Haha, what do you mean “no way”? Like I’ve been to see Knut and I couldn’t possibly care less if he’s wearing scrubs.

My neighbour’s Christmas lights are up and I can catch them from the corner of my eye when I am watching TV in the living room. The problem is they change patterns and one of them is an almost seizure inducing flicker that is reminiscent of a lightning strike.

Sadly a lot of people these days have a habit of taking stand ups seriously

Likewise, a lot of stand ups have a habit of taking themselves too seriously. Trust me, I'm a huge comedy lover, I respect the hell out of almost any form of comedy.

But I can see when someone gets too big and loses the plot, and his comedy resembles that lately.

Yeah the pandemic absolutely worked both ways there, a few comics got a little too big for their breeches being the only big name in town

I held Dave Chappelle as number two in the comedy world, Norm Macdonald at number one. Norm was the purest comedian in the world, the joke was always king with him.

Chappelle used to be that way, but in the last few years, after his netflix deal, he's started slipping into making points at every turn (make no mistake, bringing Elon on stage was another point he was going to make about progressives going too far before he stood there stunned at his audiences reaction and got thrown off and started calling them poor). It's fine, he's allowed to do that, but I'm not a fan of the direction he's taken.

He went from the fearless, hilarious comedian to trying to play the wise old, truth dispenser. Fans can state that it's an art and you can't decipher the difference between comedy and making points/becoming political because it's an act, but I'm a comedy lover and I can see it when I see it. And Chappelle is caught up in making points and clearly craves the headlines these days.

He can have that and I can not like it and I don't like him these days. I still hold him up as a top 5 comedian through body of work, however.

Seeing what Dave Chappelle has become has made me miss what Norm Macdonald truly meant to pure comedy even more, that's all I'll say.

The thing that bothered me with the last few specials he did, is he had maybe two hours of fantastic material, but he spread it around 7-ish hours worth of specials to just fill out that netflix deal. Really ruined and watered it down for me. Still love him in general, but swing and a miss

Honestly I think this applies most comics these days. Comedy is way over saturated and people are rushing specials out every year. Comics used to do one one every 2 - 3 years and it seems like most specials I've watched in the past few years could have used another half year of touring. Not bad, but not particularly good either.

I would exclude newer comics, there's been some good specials from younger comics.

I think stand up comedy in a way has bene ruined by cell phones.
Gone are the days when you could hone your act while touring, refine your material, getting rid of what doesn't work. Then you'd have your big televised special for which you could provide a tight, focused, hilarious set.

Now every stand up club appearance can be filmed and you can't work on your act like you used to. So if you want your televised show to have something fresh you're brining untested and unworked material.

Probably not the right place to post because it doesn't grind my gears this but that "I hated Alberta" article about the Toronto Cactus Club lady has gone viral. Poor Cactus Club never asked for any of this as they had to switch their twitter profile to private.

The pockets might be damned useful though.
I would love to pull off the occasional Safari Suit. Nothing beats the terry cloth jumper. Whether you're in Jamacia lounging poolside at Goldeneye or attending Teams meetings from your home office, it's the perfect outfit.

Same with realtor websites. I'm not signing over my personal information to see a listing. Just so you can add me to some marketing list. I'll grab the address and find the info somewhere else.

Comedy is in the best place it's been ever. 20 years ago you'd be lucky if there was one great comedy special and a few solid comedy movies that came out in a single year. There are no more Gatekeepers to comedy, so it's become very meritocratic and the most successful comedians are typically the best comedians as well

I still get emails and calendars from the realtor I bought my house through 8 years ago who was completely useless. I've since then discovered they're all quite useless.

Wait what, I thought cancel culture had forever ruined comedy?

Also 20 years ago was just 2002. Are you telling me there are no comedy classics from early 2000's era?

I don't think it's cell phones. It's the state of the current landscape. You need to be in the spotlight as much as possible and cash in on your 15 minutes of fame because being replaced by someone new tomorrow has never been more likely.

Outfits like Netflix are also part of the problem pushing out multiple shows in too short a span to grab viewers while someone's name is recognized, but the material is thinned out.

It's also setting a new lower bar standard, and in ways training the younger population to find subpar material entertaining.

This is totally the correct take.
