Good question, but it is relevant because the most important thing is how the value fits into your cap structure, and that is measured in straight cap hit.

You are correct that it is theoretically cheaper to sign RFA's, but the lines are blurred lately. Conner is a great value deal either way.

It's also likely that the pieces Buffalo is asking for would be crippling to the team to give up. Sure you get Eichel, but if you are losing your top two prospects, plus a pair of picks, and since it's in-division, expect a tax on that of another roster piece you need. TBH, that's been the most frustrating thing with different fan bases claiming they could be the next Eichel landing spot. Buffalo isn't a charity and is intending to extract maximum value. Whether it ends up burning them is to be seen, but I can't take seriously any projected trades where the give is a first, a second, a 1st round bust and a bunch of dead cap, bad contracts, with Buffalo retaining. If that is what it takes for someone's team to land Eichel, they aren't landing Eichel. Ditto if the pieces being moved are NMC/NTC. Even players with a 3 team list probably have Buffalo written on the top of that list in sharpie.

I'm more worried about Treliving repeating the Hamonic trade. I'd prefer nothing over giving up the 22 or 23 first. I still think the Flames make the playoffs with how much the pacific sucks but that is only if Markstrom doesn't #### the bed again. They won't outscore their issues. If they can swing Eichel then take a swing.

We are getting roughly 6 or 7 new players and a revamped coaching staff. Wouldn’t say that’s nothing. It’s just not the flavour that some wanted which apparently was Eichel. An Eichel trade carries a ton of risk.

I agree on Monahan. Probably pretty hard to trade unless he eventually shows he’s still worth his salary. If he does then the debate becomes why trade him.

I think what you see is what you get now for TC considering the Dvorak trade the other day.
