There’s a lot of 20/20 hindsight going on with Monahan.
When he was dealt, Monahan was coming off seasons of 10 and 8 goals. He could barely hold onto a 4th line spot on the roster, and it looked like he might out of the league soon. He was a cap dump, pure and simple. No other team in the league was willing to give up assets for him or take on his contract for less than a 1st round pick. And it wasn’t just a case of the Flames mis-managing him - Monahan scored 6 goals his first season with the Habs.
His turnaround is a great story. It’s also a story nobody in the league saw coming.

And, as has been said, Monahan. And a strong D core, and Markstrom.
And the common opinion on CP was that they had no stars and couldn't win.
If the Flames had:
Tkachuk - MacKinnon - Kucherov
Makar - Hedman
Shesterkin
as their core, Flame fans would complain about the lack of depth and cap space.
