The map they have there shows a detour of around 8-10 km; for a 100 metre stretch to be closed.
Depends where you're going but I'll just ride the other side of the river, the hill into diamond cove will be a nice wake up every morning but it probably won't add more than 200m to my morning commute.

You could always go on the Diamond Cove side of the river. Would only add a km or 2 but also includes that fun hill to the top of Diamond Cove.

Bonjour hi.

Spent the weekend in MTL and the smoke cleared on Monday so we had a chance to rent some road bikes before leaving. If you ever have the chance to bike in Quebec I highly recommend it!
  • The formula 1 track is open to the public and all the road bikers show up to give it a go. Very smooth tarmac and really fun to rip around and pretend you're Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton
  • There's a bike path in the middle of the river -- they've built a berm on the St Lawrence with a pathway (also camping). Fun to bike to the next town over (St Catherine's) with no cars, birds chirping, and a river on both sides.
  • The ice bridge over the St Lawrence -- super buggy but woooow that is a long river crossing.
  • The waterfront pathway and the Lachine Canal have long stretches similar to our own river pathway (better separation between pedestrians and cyclists though). Great for people-watching and casual cruising.
  • Bixi bikes and urban commuting -- the bikes are clunkers but reliable and the stations are everywhere. Overall MTL has some of the best cycling infrastructure I've ever ridden (in North America).

Looking at a map, it seems like they have lots of long distance regional bike routes as well -- would love to go back and give some of those a go sometime.

Yeah, I'll probably just stick to the canal pathway for now. Just found it odd that the map they give has a crazy detour when Diamond Cove is a better option.

The UCI Road World Championships is going to be in Montreal in 2026. It's a ways off but I'm planning to go watch and bring my bike along for some riding before and after.

I've heard there are also some amazing rides between smaller townships in Quebec.

It's also a bit funny to hear the F1 track described as very smooth...of course it is, but by F1 standards it is actually considered one of the bumpiest tracks! I suppose 300kph might feel a bit different than 30kph.

I'll second the riding the track on a Bixi bike. Had a smile on my face the entire lap.
Spoiler!

Does anyone else feel like the city goes out of its way to make pathway detours as painful as possible? I don't think I could come up with worse routing if I tried...

Michael Woods has won stage 9 of the Tour de France! This is awesome because he is Canadian, and because he is one of the older guys.

Where is everyone watching? I used to love when it was on OLN. Now I don't even know it's on.

Stupid question:

I have an entry level Cannondale Synapse Soira.

If I bought a better road bike (ie non entry level), how much of a boost would I get speed wise when riding? minimal or more than minimal?

If you put better wheels on your existing road bike (better aero and lighter weight) you would probably notice.

Shifting with higher end components is more precise but if both are well adjusted no real difference in efficiency.

Weight itself go out and ride your bike with two full water bottles vs two empty water bottles and that’s 3-4lbs worth of difference in static weight.

For me I’m of the general opinion that for recreational riding with the odd non-competitive tri / fondo you don’t notice the difference on a more expensive bike in general. But putting better wheels on a cheaper bike will create a noticeable difference.

Yep, looks like the cheapest you can do is $65US for the 6 month membership. It really sucks- you’d think Sportsnet or TSN would pick up the contract on one of their gazillion channels.

I declined to do it this year as I am in the States for the last half of the tour, and Flo will not work down there. I believe Peacock has the coverage in the US.

Anyway, looks like Pogacar picked up 8 seconds on Vingegaard today, after a string of +00 stages. Gap is 15 seconds. I believe both tend to shine in the second half of the tour, but it was moreso Vingegaard last year in the last week or so.

100% this. I cancelled my FloBikes this year, it has been terrible in past years and the price is ridiculous. My VPN and GCN subscriptions together come out cheaper.

Startup Show on my nvidia shield. I'm watching it on the Eurosport channel. I used to watch it on Flobikes but it's a ripoff.

To watch the TdeF, I use the Australian network, SBS. It's free but you need a VPN with an Australian server. You can watch the stages on demand as well.
