Because Brouwer is arguably the better bottom six player. Moulson would not be playing with skilled players here. He would be bottom line.
Buffalo would have to eat 2M salary and throw in Baptiste.
With Moulson on waivers, Buffalo doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Brouwer is a blackhole regardless of where he plays, who he plays with, and how little ice time he gets.
The idea is that you save a year by picking up Moulson and make a buyout more palatable.

Moulson cleared.
But interesting thing: instead of assigning him to Rochester the Sabres AHL affiliate, the Sabres assigned him to Ontario, California the Kings AHL affiliate.
Why is that interesting? Moulson's brother in law is Jonathan Quick.

Moulson also lives in Cali, so maybe letting him be closer to home.

Yeah, that kind of seems like they are saying that they respect the man himself, but he is likely not going to be part of the sabres team going forward. Don't expect a call up.

Not to pull speculation out of nowhere, but the hurricanes are in an interesting space. They are struggling, and Noah hanifin is receiving less ice time while in line for his first real payday at the end of the season. He may be in the process of being passed by slavin (already top pairing) and fleury.
They are weak on RD.
Would hanifin + for hamilton be such a bad swap for either team? Lots of potential on both sides, could be a hockey trade.

Hanifin is a solid defender, but not as strong offensively. At this point I wonder if gio-brodie and hanifin-hamonic would make us worse on paper, but better in reality. Anyway, wednesday morning thoughts.

Over dinner on Monday with my cousin who plays for Carolina, he felt Slavin and Pesce were their best defenseman this year and that Hanafin’s consistency is a roller coaster of confidence. So personally, I think Dougie is the surer bet over the long run.

Very interesting. Thank you.
Edit : maybe a possible 'buy low', but to come completely clean, I am in the 'shake things up' camp.

How is Gauthier doing for Carolina? I know he's in the minors but he's a HUGE RW that I really wanted the Flames to get. If making a deal with them, I'd go after one of their young D and Gauthier for sure.

For what it's worth:
"Noah Hanifin leads all NHL defensemen in 5-on-5 points per 60. His 1.71 points/60 leads all 186 d-men w/ 200+ mins of 5-on-5 ice time.
Have a nice day."

"@brettfinger
Hanifin also has the best 5-on-5 corsi share among NHL defensemen.
His 58.69% corsi for is firmly planted atop the 186 defensemen w/ 200+ 5-on-5 minutes."

He’s struggling a bit for Charlotte- only 4 pts in 17 games. He’s still very young though, and like you say, he’s Bertuzzi big with skating ability.

No surprise that Moulson cleared waivers. If Brouwer was to be put on waivers, there is no doubt he would clear as well.

I mentioned this in another thread. I don't think ownership wants to pay that much to a guy to play in the minors and it seems like GG loves him. As much as I'd like it, I don't think Brouwer will go on waivers (this year). I can see waivers for purpose of a buy out in the future.
