From the story there were no criminal charges. Which is astounding. And infuriating.
Different rules for some folks.

My buddy's younger brother was this meathead. I still remember talking to him in high school and he would say he wants to become a policeman so that he could "beat up indians".
Guess what his vocation is today?

These cases should result in termination and force the union to fight it. In any private industry this person would be paid to go away quietly. Give him common law severance and get him out of the force.
The give this punishment of demotion to anyone who viewed the video and didn’t report.

I also wonder why they only chose to protect one member of the police force. This involved two of them (and more considering who saw the video/pictures) What could it possibly be...

I love how they talk about the paycut, its a band and the high mark is hardly a hit to his wallet which is probably what he got.
His colleagues and CPS asked for a 2 weeks suspension, which is even more embarrassing.

It's absurd -- but honestly not surprising -- that the police union would prioritize defending the male offender's career in this case over protecting the workplace safety of the female victim.

Not just stealing, they could legitimately simply forgot to scan a chocolate bar.

Imagine creating a list of disappointing councilors, and not including Sean Chu on it? How do you even do that?

Actually they usually resign, because the options usually given to them are resign or we fire you and press charges. In any event they ain’t working there anymore.

The Union doesn’t make the decision to not fire the employee. They’re also legally required to provide fair representation to a member in this scenario. Even if hypothetically they told the employer that they disagreed with their decision to not terminate the employee it wouldn’t change the situation because the employer wouldn’t be required to change their decision as the Union doesn’t really have the ability to grieve a company keeping a member employed.
Without knowing all of the details I’d agree with what GGG said, this is a case where the employer probably should have terminated the employee because I don’t think the Union would have had a hope in hell of getting them reinstated given the circumstances.

Not only would I have been fired had I done what the member did, I'd probably have my license revoked and have to switch careers.

Yeah I think that’s a pretty standard outcome in this scenario. Odd that the CPS took made this decision.

He committed a felony and is essentially being issued a fine.
That is not proportional.

That’s kind of the odd part here(no not the fact that felonies aren’t actually a thing in Canada ), why did she not press criminal charges against this officer?

Call it a crime then...
I'm no fancy 'Big-City Lawyer' or nuthin' but I still think passing around naked photos of someone that were supposed to be private is a crime.
Why didn't she press charges? I dont know. Why does she have to though? If you have sufficient evidence of a crime isn't The Crown compelled to press charges?
