Don't get me wrong. I think anything north of 10M AAV for JG would be obscene. But Free agency day is a blood bath.

Suter and Parise made 88M plus a 6.666M buyout while playing 9 seasons in Minnesota for 10.5M/year on average. During those same years, Montreal and Nashville paid Weber 98M for him to play for them for 9 seasons approaching 11M a year. Top UFAs have been paid 10M/year for over a decade now even if an imaginary number that doesn't impact their bank account said they were making less.
Tavares' highest career year with the Islanders was 86 points, and his last year he didn't even lead them in scoring (Barzal did), yet he still got 11M for 7 years.
During the earlier cap years, players like Ovechkin and Iginla were making substantially more than 12% of the cap (10M with 82.5M cap is 12.12%).
Not really sure why you would find Gaudreau making 10M obscene. It almost has to be a guarantee.

It was a genuine question. No need to be a dick about it.
Why is arrogance some peoples default to any interaction?
Why don’t you answer the question and tell me which Flames rumours he’s been the “premiere hockey insider” on?

You were dismissive of Seravalli and I informed you he's the premier NHL insider. Overreact much?

Don't let Seravalli tear us apart; it's what he wants.

I just saw that Slavkosky has jumped Wright on the rankings for Bob McKenzie.
I would have a lot more interest in the 2nd overall pick if Wright was available especially if the Flames could get a + like Holtz in the deal.
Trade Tkachuk to NJ takes them out of the Johnny sweepstakes

Why wouldn't they wait to see if they can sign Gaudreau first though. Then they could keep all those other assets as well as add a premier winger to their core.
I feel like I keep repeating myself, but I guess everyone is at this point....I pick Nashville as the dark horse to swoop in and sign Johnny, but the Devils make so much sense it's kind of scary.

FWIW I would sign 10x8 in a heart beat. That said, the players you listed don't rely on agility, which diminishes with age more than strength or shooting. Which is why I am nervous about an 11M contract for 8 years. I just don't see the same long term ROI.

Or, you know, you could just answer the question instead of deflecting? Perhaps you don’t actually have any evidence that he is in da cut a reliable Flames insider? Surely there must be something out there to cause you to think he is?

Personally I think the Devils would rather have Tkachuk who is a big body vs Gaudreau. Lots of talk their pick is in play so not sure they will wait to free agency regardless.
I did just read the article McKenzie wrote and it really paints the picture this draft sucks. I would have more excitement in the center than left winger but the article reads like either guy could easily not be a top line player.
I think if Nashville signs Johnny then Calgary will sign Forsberg.

Flames should offer more than they did. Thought it when it happened and still think it now if Seravalli is right. Johnny wants and deserves an AAV in the double digits.

How do you even know what they offered? Maybe they offered something obscene like $13MM

I assume you assume that they offered $9.5M. I guess we don't know that for sure, although I think you are correct.
But I think it's always been a forgone conclusion that Johnny was getting double digits and likely then some.

Who cares, would people really lose this guy over 2M?

We wouldn’t, but some owners might not want to spend the additional 14-16m in a 7/8 year span. I most certainly hope we aren’t lowballing our superstar winger.

If they don't keep him the money will be spent elsewhere

If Johnny is gone, that really sucks.
Spend the money on Forsberg though and the savings on Tkachuk and the rest of increasing the scouting and development team.

Okay, where is the line? 1 or 2 million will be the difference between retaining players like Kyllington and Mangiapane, who are also important to the teams success.
