article provides a few clarifications
(Maybe this greenline discussion should be over in Calgary Transit?)

"For now, the province is paying $2.5 million to a private consultant to develop a new LRT alignment. That report is expected in December."

This doesn't even feel like enough to get a +100%/-50% estimate on a project this size. It is essentially starting over.

SE LRT being added to 7th Ave is a 100% nonstarter.

7th Ave is beyond it's real world capacity already. Running all 4 car trains adds to the problem because of the block length at the block length at the west end. We saw this lots of times daily before COVID when more 4 car trains were being run - where a train blocked 8th Street.

Before COVID, we already desperately needed to start thinking about moving the Red line off of 7th, because any more growth was impossible.

Spending even a dollar on adding SE LRT to 7th Ave is a dollar wasted.

Agreed. Also getting the red line off 7th to potentially the 8th tunnel, could also provide an opportunity to tweak the blue line on the west end so, in emergencies, it could also use 8th when 7th eventually gets shut down to an accident.

That would require modifications at both ends of downtown to make work.

The east side would be near impossible.

The provincial government says the ball is in Calgary city council’s court.

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek says the ball is in the provincial government’s court.

[...] Dan Williams, Smith’s point man on the addictions file, tells us if Calgary city council tells him they want the six-year-old drug site at the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre shut down he will do it. The government will then bring in an alternative, still looking after those overdosing but with more emphasis on getting addicts off drugs for good.

...

The mayor says she is not going to go to war with the UCP government of Premier Danielle Smith if the province shuts down the drug site in Calgary. In fact, Gondek says she believes the Chumir drug site is not working. [...] But the mayor is not supporting the idea of Calgary city council asking Smith to close the drug site. Gondek says that’s not the city’s job. If Smith and her people want to close the drug site, close it. They don’t need the city’s thumbs-up.

“If you don’t want it there, then don’t have it there. You’re not going to get a fight from us,” says Gondek, to the Smith government. “They have already said what’s happening at the Sheldon Chumir isn’t working. We should not have a safe consumption site there. OK. Great. We agree with you. What’s the alternative? That’s all I’m waiting to hear.

https://calgaryherald.com/opinion/co...gary-drug-site
JFC, Gondek, will you just be the bigger person already? Do the right thing, and get city council to ask the sh-theads at the Provincial government instead of this f-cking stalemate.

God damn it. I am so sick of the UCP and Calgary's City Council, bunch of time-wasting morons playing their stupid games.

I, too, complain about Gondek being a time-wasting morons playing stupid games while complaining that Gondek refuses to be a time-wasting moron playing the UCPs stupid games.

I think she's probably trying to avoid having this play out exactly as you can predict it playing out. Council says we don't wan't it, government shuts it down with no replacement plan until some unknown day in the future, residents get upset, province blames city who told them to shut it down...

Sounds like she just wants to know what the replacment plan is before requesting the closure, which seems...responsible?

Red Deer already did it, and the province is pulling the plug in the spring.

The fact is that both Gondek and the province agree that the site isn't working. To bring it before council and do the necessary to vote on the damn thing as soon as possible gets the ball rolling and actually accomplishes something. The province is being run by a bunch of children and as malignant a tumour as they come, but if you can actually get something out of them that you agree with and all you have to do is ask, JFC, be the bigger person and ask instead of digging your heels in at the cost of the people you're supposed to represent.

Province: Ask us.
Mayor: Not our job.
Province: Do we agree on the issue?
Mayor: We agree on the issue, yes.
Province: Then ask us.
Mayor: Not our job to ask you.
Province: Ask us and we'll do it.
Mayor: It's not our job to ask.
Province: Red Deer asked.
Red Deer: We asked and they actually did it for once, it was cool.

I think the very last paragraph of that article addresses what I am suggesting might be the concern(and I have no idea on the issue, but by default I'm not going to assume the province is operating without games).

It’s not actually necessary.

It’s amazing you can type all that out and come to the conclusion that both sides are the issue.

I am pretty clear in saying that the UCP are the problem here. In saying that, it is a needless stalemate Gondek is forcing Calgarians into by not just getting it over with. Yeah, the UCP are childish idiots... but if you can get them to do something you agree with, you do it. That is what I mean by wasting time. Do it, get it over with, and move on to other issues.

It isn't often I agree with anything the UCP does, but everything we've done to this point has equated to indifference disguised as compassion. This at least gives me some hope that the broken clock is right for the second time today. A focus on treatment and recovery.

There is actually some pretty gross and scary stuff involved in the UCP addictions stuff.

At the best its just classic cronyism. At its worst its appointing some despicable people to positions of authority over vulnerable people.

No real medical professionals are on board with this. Tbf real med professionals don't have a magic wand to fix this issue, either, because it's a nearly impossible issue.mBut no, the city should not do a single thing to be complicit in advancing Marlaina's nefarious plot.

Well will you look at that. Fuzz nails it again.

Quote:
"We cannot close down a supervised consumption site without an alternative plan because anyone seeking those supports will immediately be kicked out onto the street or left in their own home. That doesn't create a safe environment," Gondek said to media on Wednesday.

"What I need from the province is a plan on what they're going to do if it's not going to be the existing site."
Quote:
"We have been clear. We agree with you the site is not working as intended. So what's your new plan?" Gondek said.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calga...340860?cmp=rss

It seems like the UCP plan is rehab centres, and they just ignore the possibility that some people will continue to consume drugs. So there will be more on the streets, which means they should have a plan for increased police patrols and social services to manage that. Dan Williams doesn't mention anything like that in his letter. We'll get to the "residents get upset, province blames city who told them to shut it down..." part sometime after that starts happening.

Curious, for the rest of of us in our employment how would this have played out? I'm guessing we're all getting fired.
