The problem is that they would need to replace him and it would cost more. for the RNH camp he's a young UFA, there's no way he doesn't test the market and get a hefty raise.
If Edmonton wants him long term, they'll have to pay out the butt.

I was going to say that I think if he becomes an UFA and left unprotected then Seattle is going to use their expansion pick on him if they get an inkling he will sign. They have a window of a few days to see if they can come to terms. Then I looked at their roster and I struggle to protect 6 forwards and 3 Dmen.

Why would Seattle spend the pick on a UFA (I might be daft here). Of all the teams they're probably going to have the best cap situation out there if they really want him.

Wait. Are you saying that Nugent Hopkins might actually employ professionals who would understand that teams like Detroit & Seattle could write him a blank cheque.
Either he leaves or the Oilers pay him Draisatl money.

I think Nugent Hopkins is getting +$7.0 m on a long term contract regardless of whichever team he signs for.

So they don't have to be stuck with any other former Oiler.
Well since he'd be moving on from Edmonton the answer is - he'd be better.
I actually like him as a two-way player. But it may be too late for him.
This is the thing for me. They say he’s a two way player, but is there actual evidence of that or is it just a low bar in Edmonton (see “McDavid for Selke” above).
But maybe he is. He seems pretty weak for a defensive guy to me.
It is eerie that both of them are within two points of one another this late into their careers.
I won't be surprised to see McAvi quickly overtake Crosby moving forward. Crosby worked his ass off to reinvent and improve his game year after year; to become the best, most complete player in the world, and it required big sacrifices on the offensive side of the puck. McAvi and the Oilers don't seem to care much about anything beyond sick dangles and crossovers. Hell, I am betting that Crosby would have gotten to 500 a lot quicker if he was only interested in making hilight-reel plays all those years.

Crosby definitely would have got to 500 faster if he got the same amount of icetime that McAvi gets each and every game. I feel pretty safe saying I don’t think Crosby was ever given a six minute shift in his NHL career.

Despite what many took as a clear win for the Flames when Neal hit waivers the other day, it truly makes the deal more of a win the other way around thanks in part to the flexibility his deal gives the Oilers. On top of the no-movement clause as well, Lucic’s current deal is very incentive-based, meaning that it is essentially ‘buy-out proof’, compared to Neal’s who the Oilers may very well choose to buy out this upcoming offseason
At the end of the day, both of these players are clearly in the declining stages of their careers and are both on bad contracts. However, it is clear to most that Neal is still the superior of the two, and the fact the Oilers have the option to place him on waivers as they did on Saturday does, even more, proves they won this trade
The level of delusion is truly astounding.

Same reason Vegas used their pick on Engelland for us. There is a three day period before the draft that they are able to talk to UFAs that aren't protected. I think Larrson might also be a target. The alternative is picking another Griffin Reinhart. A good chunk of that team is waiver fodder.
