Apparently the Kings might have a minor trade brewing before tomorrow's roster freeze
The Mayor John Hoven @mayorNHL
NHL holiday trade freeze kicks in tmrw. Hearing a small deal is possible. Might choose to make a small tweak; had something brewing recently

I no longer think we should be going after Bernier. Not because of Bernier's play but because of Ramo's play. I think he's comfortably set in as our #1 goalie and we shouldn't upset the applecart unless something unforeseeable happens.

There is probably only about 10-15 guys in the league I'd call a No 1... these days the standings are so tight you that if you don't have a Carey Price, Quick, etc type goalie, you want to have a solid 1b to compliment your 1a.... just look at how goalies swapped in and out of last years playoffs. Ramo isn't a de facto No 1 goalie, he's a 1a/1b at best... you need a compliment. Last year, Hiller worked, this year it isn't (or hasn't). I still believe in Ortio, but if Hartley doesn't, we need a 1b. A small run shouldn't change that... once Ramo is off his hot streak, we need some one to fill in.

I don't think Ramo's play of late should have any bearing on the search to improve the organization's goaltending situation. He's been playing great of late but we have seen this before from him only to settle back down into average to substandard play. I don't believe the Flames should be reactionary with their search and if an opportunity arises to improve the situation I believe they should go for it. Barring Ramo having a career season from now on in I'm still of the opinion the team should head into a different direction next season.

No way he is viewed as a long term #1, we are on a collision course for having no one, or gross over payment for getting anyone for that position next year.
Bernier buys some time. Hiller is done IMO.

Something like Ramo remembering he's Ramo? I don't get this opposition to bringing in goaltending. Our goaltending sucks, a 7 game win streak doesn't change that. If someone can come in and be better then hell yeah, look to bring them in.

Confidence goes a long way in how a goalie performs. As long as the coach and team have confidence in Ramo and he plays with confidence, I don't see any reason to change things up. We saw how things went when they had the three goalie situation with nothing decided. This doesn't work for goalies while the present situation does.
Going back to the coach's input, we see what's happened to Bernier with a new coach who doesn't believe in him. Yeah sure a change could be eventually great for him but maybe not for Ramo.

Flames were paying Regehr the equivalent of about 5-5.5 per year during the length of his contract where he only broke 20 points a handful of times, and that was during a time when scoring was higher than it is now and the flames had offensive players like Huselius , Phaneuf and Cammalleri on the team.
Now, obviously the flames did nothing or less than nothing during those years, so many it's a cautionary tale about paying a defender that doesn't produce points, buuuuut! points ain't everything and for some players actually cloud the discussion.

Mar 1, Flames in playoffs by 2 points and Ramo gets hurt. Now what?

Hiller or Ortio. I'd let the situation play itself out. Going by previous work, both of our other goalies should come around by then.
i like Bernier as a future goalie but right now he's in the same situation as Hiller and Ortio. He has no confidence and coming to a new team in the middle of the season may take longer to get it back than the goalies we have.

#1 Goaltender
|
I want Johansen to round out our top six.
Gaudreau- Monahan- Hudler
Bennett- Johansen- Frolik
That is drool worthy. Any combination of our first, second, Jankowski, Hickey, Poirer, Klimchuck, Arnold, Russell, Ferland, Jooris, Wideman and make it happen.
Not an easy trade to make, but it would really set us up with a ridiculous, young core for the future.
Monahan
Gaudreau
Johansen
Bennett
Frolik
Brodie
Hamilton
Gillies
Macdonald.
Sign me up.

Lavoie told fan 590 it was suggested to him by somebody that Flames would trade Giordano for Johansen. He checked into it and it was false.

In a heart beat you make that deal from the Flames perspective. No way Columbus does that.

I don't know if you do. There is obviously some issue with Johansen, and this isn't the first time it has come up as an issue.

Two issues - a big money difference resulting in a bridge deal that he wasn't very happy with, and Tortorella. Lots of players have overcome both contract and coach issues, especially on other teams.
Now if he's always out of shape, a partier, addicted or just plain uncoachable, that's a different story.

I'm not so sure. Gio appears to be trending back to an elite level and is such a phenomenal leader. I get the aspect that Johansen is much younger and has loads of potential but when you have a team full of young, high-potential players with zero leadership (Johansen has a bad rep as a teammate) you get the Oilers.

I don't think the young players on this team have zero leadership. Monahan already gets an A some games. Johnny doesn't have one but his in-game leadership is pretty good.
Plus you have Stajan and Wideman, both of whom I think are pretty good leaders off the ice. Jones and Russell too, if they re-sign at a good price. Going forward you also have Brodie who is transitioning into a leadership role IMO.

I remember the last time a similar situation happened.....remember a guy named Tyler Seguin? This situation reminds me exactly of that. Back then the Flames didnt have resources to trade for Seguin and were in a different position in the rebuild.
Now we can potentially trade future 1st round picks, 2nd round picks, Russell, Wideman, Hudler, Poirier, Klimchuk, Hickey, Kylington, Andersson, Arnold, Granlund, Jooris, Backlund.
There has to be a trade in there somewhere. If this guy gets traded, I really think he takes off. I truly feel he's just not happy in Columbus anymore, and its very hard to do great at your job when you're not happy.

Gio is rounding back into Norris form.. As many knew he would.
You send him for a guy playing worse hockey than Backlund?
As for Bernier, I'm all for him getting a PTO over the summer. Heck, even signed to a reasonable deal to be a backup/ 1a/1b as some suggest.
But he doesn't help our situation now. The guy is playing worse hockey than Ramo.
Ramo has settled in. He looks great these days.. Sure he may slip up here and there but don't rock the boat on purpose.. Ride him out.
