Leylah wins the opening set despite not serving well at all (first serve percentage). That bodes very well.

Svitolina making her move, suddenly much more aggressive this return game. You can even hear it when she hits the ball.

A hold here is paramount.

Edit: Okay, third set then.

Her serve has been bad all day, but now she's losing the ensuing rallies that result from the 2nd serve and that's death.

Third set, here we come.

Wild game. Leylah absolutely pushing her to the brink.

... Okay NOW third set here we come.

Even though she didn't win that game, those last 3 games to take it from an easy 6-1 set to a 6-3 set that involved multiple break points in the closing game are so huge. Instead of thinking "okay, I've got this figured out, we're rolling", Svitolina must now be feeling immense relief that she avoided a collapse.

Is it just me, or is women's tennis more entertaining than men's?

Nah. In this tournament I think maybe so, but in general a great back-and-forth men's 5 setter between two players who are going for their shots is better than even the best women's match for entertainment value.

I agree with CHL, but it can be tough sledding watching an Isner - Opelka match.

I don't know much about tennis - never played. So I guess I judge the entertainment value on the length of the rallies more than anything.

Since the commentary likes talking about Serena so much, they should mention if Leylah wins today she moves past Serena in the rankings. Who saw that at the beginning of the year.

That net cord could be very mentally damaging. Could be a turning point for the set.

Svitolina has really stepped it up and is playing as hard as she can.

It depends on a lot of factors, the players, the crowd, style of play, surface. Tennis is a very enjoyable sport. So many storylines, rivalries, characters.

Glad you're enjoying it!

I think it's one of the best sports to view on TV.

I started playing tennis as a kid because I couldn't afford to golf lol. My dad bought me my first racket and a can of balls and many years later, I still love it.

That was the worst lob I think I've ever seen in a grand slam... and then a winner! Mission failed successfully!

Please close this out.

Can somebody tell me when Maria Sharapova showed up in this match?

Edit: How about the wheels on Leylah?

That'd be mid way through set 2 when Svitolina realized that just hitting the ball back deep up the middle on every shot was probably not the move.

What defence from Leylah on that point. Wow.

This kid! How is she making some of these shots? The angles and speed. Ridiculous.
