I'm sure the 49ers could be persuaded to trade A. Smith

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this. If the team was going to yank the chain so fast on their young QB project, why didn't they just get a veteran QB during the offseason in the first place.

They did...but he ended up in NY!!

Not much different than Jackson and he is injured...no?
Much rumbling down this way that TB has contacted Minny about sending Jeff Garcia their way...would be a solid move for the Vikes IMO.
All the guy ever does is win and take teams to the playoffs....when he has a decent cast around him. I would say that Minnesota qualifies in that category.

Yeah, on the IR.
Broken bone in his shoulder - the same one he had surgery on last year.
Before he was put on the IR,
Quote:
When asked if the 49ers could keep Smith as anything less than the clear-cut starter next year, McCloughan said: "You can't."
"The amount of money we're going to invest in him, he'd have to be proven that he's the guy," McCloughan added. "When we get to the offseason, he'd have to be the guy for next year."
|
So Smith is done as a 49er.

I'm all for the Vikings getting Jeff Garcia. But god knows that move might actually IMPROVE the team, which is why I think they won't do it.
I sincerely hope Childress is fired at the end of this season. He should have been fired before last year and replaced with Mike Tomlin....but I digress.
This team has WAY too much talent(minus QB and WR) to miss the playoffs this year.

Bob Sanders out at least 4 weeks with a high ankle sprain.

That team is decimated by injuries. The D struggle without Sanders, I'm not sure how this team can contend with both sides of the ball struggling to deal with injuries.

By the way, a headline from Monday in the Bay area.
49ers, Raiders, A's, Giants win; Earth spins out of orbit
Quote:
That's rare. Since the Raiders moved back to Oakland in 1995, we have hit that superfecta only one other time in 13 years. On Oct. 7, 2001, the 49ers beat Carolina 24-14 and the Raiders beat Dallas 28-21. In baseball action, the Giants closed their season with a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers, and the A's rested up for the playoffs by beating Anaheim 6-2 in the JV game.

Why would Tomlin leave Pittsburgh for Minnesota? I know he came from there, but it would have to be a Gruden type situation where Minnesota was sending draft picks and cash the other way.
Pittsburgh is a better situation for a coach than Minnesota, IMO. They like to stick with their guy, ask Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher.

He meant back when Tomlin was DC for the Vikes, he should've been promoted and Childress fired. I really liked Childress when he was OC for the Eagles, but I think he's better suited in that kind of role.

We could have hired him BEFORE he went to Pittsburgh, while he was still our defensive coordinator. There were rumblings in the media that Childress would be let go, but ultimately the owner seems to be happy with the direction of the franchise.

Gotcha, I just saw the "last year" and got off on a tangent.
Aren't they opening up a new stadium next season? They could use a new outlook/direction. Bobby Petrino should be ready to move on by then...

Well we will see what Gus can do now. Honestly if they can just get a mediocre QB running the offense in Minnesota this is a playoff team. I like Jackson but it was painful watching him out there every week. Loads of potential but thats just not enough in the NFL.

As someone who has had Gus starting games for my team at one time I can tell you that the guy can be very good in the right situation. It's quite possible that your offense will take off now...and I tend to think they will be much better the rest of the way.

Well he did an average job when he was with Minnesota back in 04/05 (IIRC).
As long as he can manage the game......we will be okay. I've said that for a year now, as long as we have a QB who can just not turnover the ball, we should be good.
Now granted the two losses are not all Jackson's fault....receivers dropping passes(Shiancoe anyone?), playcalling (run-run-pass?)...but in the last game he was missing open receiver by a fair bit.
The move is complete desperation on Childress's part, and if both of our stating receivers are out (Berrian with turf toe and Rice with knee injury), it will be interesting to see if Gus struggles this week.

I don't think Jackson has a lot of confidence. I saw him as very reluctant to throw the ball when I watched in week 1.
Frerotte has a heck of an arm...and a lot of experience. He'll throw picks too, but he's going to make the passing game much more formidable.

Week 1 the colour guy (I can't recall who it was) were saying the playcalling wasn't giving Jackson any opportunity to air it out, any chances to show of his skills. It seems to me that the team doesn't have any faith in Jackson. Let him air it out a few times when the D puts 8 in the box, just to keep the D honest.
Bernard Berrian can fly, lets see how far the kid can throw.

Can't disagree with that either. Having Purple Jesus doing what he did in that game should've presented them with the perfect opportunity to do just that too.
Berrian has been banged up though. Bad toe. Seems to be a pervasive problem in the NFL this year.

The problem is there was all this talk during training camp and in the pre-season that Jackson had progressed so much....hell someone even compared him to Donavon McNabb.
And then after two games, you pull the plug on this "experiment".

I actually find that the Chiefs do similar stuff with Brodie Croyle when he's not injured. It's like they try to shelter him and not let him throw the ball down the field so he won't throw interceptions or take hits. Yet he still gets nailed since the Chiefs line is bad. Fact is of all their QB's he's got the best arm by a mile, and is better suited to throwing the ball down the field than all the short stuff. Yet when Croyle goes out...they let Huard throw the ball down field and what does he do....throw a pick!
I have to wonder what the NFL play callers really do think sometimes.

Yup, it's kind of similar to that. I can see them opening up the playbook for Gus, but they leave it so restriced for Tarvaris.
I mean, he's got the skill, just needs to get the experience to use that skill accordingly. And that's not going to happen when you put him in 3rd and long's on EVERY drive.
But Childress is supposed to be an offensive guru, and has his "kick ass offense" running in full gear. I wonder how long till I have to wear one of these with my jersey.
