Why would Marchand come to Calgary?
He’ll go to a contender, not a team fighting to make the playoffs.
I agree he’d be a good choice on a short term deal, but……

Basically every team in the league are going to be interested in Marchand, starting with Florida. And Toronto.
Flames can make an interesting landing spot for a center, especially someone who wants a bigger role than what's maybe being offered elsewhere, and someone who is young enough to see the team grow into it's potential.
For a winger close to retirement looking to win now? Marchand probably won't even pick up the phone if Conroy calls. I guess maybe if we massively outbid everyone else.

If he wins a cup I’m sure he wouldn’t mind overpayment for a few years. We can do that while we’ve got the space.

I think the Avs are the only team West of the Eastern time zone that Marchand would consider.

I think the word ‘might’ in the thread title is the key one.

He's already won cup(s).
It's not always about winning cups anyway.
He wants to compete. He wants to be on a contending team.

No long term big contracts please.
The team isn't ready to be a contender and by the time the young players get there, that contract will be a complimentary player with too much cap hit. We already have that in Huby.
I think Marner is a good player, but makes no sense for the Flames and the Flames make no sense for him.

That’s in the eye of the beholder (conman)
We have the capspace. It’s been said we want to upgrade our offense. He’s the best available to do that.
With andersson more than likely leaving they might need to spend some money on D as well.

Yes he has, and we are a team trying to make the playoffs with his help. I don’t see us out of the equation if it means overpaying for his services for 2 seasons.

To play with Crosby and eventually Makar?

I like what Conroy has done to date & I'd be surprised if he made a $13M long term signing right now; especially a winger.
Save that play for 2-4 years down the road.
We will see what he really has in mind I guess; I dont trust the report.

Rantanen made sense because he’s a rare player. Big fast skilled and can play heavy along the boards.
Marner is soft soft player who has a record of not showing up when it matters. Just doesn’t have the DNA of a winner.
Just because we have cap space doesn’t mean we spend is recklessly. We still have young players to lockup.
Any long term commitments this offseason should be for our own players.

I think Benn is a free agent as well maybe we should go hard after him as well.
Benn Backlund Marchand 2nd line.

Am all for it, but has to be the right player.
Flames got a lot of good vibes from the players and agents around the league by the performance this year. New building underway, money to spend on long term contracts, increased cap.
It's just finding the right player who will be there around as long as the Kadri and Huberdeau. Willing to go through maybe one more year of pain until turning the corner.
Raatanen would've been that top player, no question. Conroy has to have known something to have been bullish on that.
Marner less so. Age is right but unproven in crunch time and trends on the soft side.
So yeah it can't be forced. But Conroy has learned the last two trade deadlines and UFA July last year that when push comes to shove, for all the current and future positives with this organization and that acknowledged around the league, there's still a bigger carrot/better out there for many players.
He really wanted someone in addition to Mantha last summer and for all the chats around the cap space and players interested here, in the end less came out of that than he thought too, last summer and all season for trades.
So, at some point he may have to pay a premium to get a top guy in this year as opposed to a year closer to the new building. And the team needs to be bolstered (this that player wouldn't want to be the only add) to get anywhere near the playoffs next year, and that's assuming goaltending is as good next as it was this.

You'd really sacrifice a chance at Makar for a 36 year old LW?

No I was joking. I hate Benn actually he’s a cheap dirty player.
But how would that have anything to do with Makar. If our cap space stays open I would think they would have had some intel on Makar being open to coming home.

Does anyone know if Marner can get 19/yr plus deferred money (ie more than $133 million)?
