Its funny, with Star Wars, they put the technology in place but the writers never try to explain it. They don't go into explanations of how light sabres can freeze laser beams, there was never an explanation of hyper matter reactors or a loving description of how the Death Star works.
Instead its the fans that try to fill in the technical gaps.
In Star Trek, the writers trying to explain the technology. Or write themselves into a corner and try to tech their way out.
I've always thought it was weird that in every episode of next generation they were literally modifying systems on the fly, pushing energy backwards through a conduit or funneling different energy through the scanner array. Or improving warp core performance by dumping something into the warp drive.
And they would do it in 8 minutes on the fly with like no safety or testing.
It would be equivalent to an ensign on an aircraft carrier telling a Captain that he can boost the efficiency of the ANS Spy radar by pumping plutonium through the solid state chips.
Just once, I would have liked to have seen one of the techno solutions in Star Trek completely failing.

Well the detailed technical stuff (even if it's nonsense) is more of a hallmark of sci-fi, and Star Wars isn't really sci fi. Star Trek... used to be.

The Sopranos style series end.
At the climax of the series ending battle when all looks lost the engineer says he can do some Star Trek magic solution, the captain says do it, and the ship transforms into a fine cloud of subatomic particles. The End.

*Fade to Black* aaaaand.....credits.
But that has nothing to do with Star Wars and Space Whales.
So...at what point does Thrawn leave, and Ahsoka shows up too late, so then Ezra, Ahsoka and Sabine lash Ezra's little hut there to a space whale and ride it back to the normal Galaxy to take on Thrawn?
Come on!! Make it happen!
The fact that she's riding in a space whale's mouth in the first place isnt all that far off.

Nope, Star Wars is a sword and sorcery concept with really cool ship and weapon designs.
How can someone not look at a Star Destroyer and understand exactly what it is. Or the ugly dog cuteness of the battered Falcon and fall in love with it. Or the mass of the Death Star with a laser gun and not feel the power of it.
We really don't need to know how it works.
Or the terminology. Turbo Laser, its a laser, does it have a manifold on it? Who cares.
I mean the Tie Fighter was designed to look sinister, the X-Wing was designed to look like a WW2 Fighter, and the Y-Wing was meant to look like it was glued together after being hauled out of a junk yard.
We love our Star Wars tech because it looks cool and different and it has feel instead of required tech.
The other thing that stands out, in the prequels everything was shiny, and artistic until the third movie, then in the OT everything looked kind of worn or desperate on the rebel side, while the Imperial ships and troops looked intimidating.
Star Trek, everything looked kinda functional and could be techno explained. But Federation ships looked like hotels, meant to house entitled and arrogant Star Fleet officers. Klingon Ships looked like rough engines of death and conquest. Romulon ships looked like something out of the Roman empire. But in theory you could look at the navigation console or engineering console and say yeah that could make sense.
The Bridge of a Star Destroyer and its consoles make no sense except you had what amounted to slave pits with over seers standing over cringing crew members knowing that one mistake would lead to a brutal end.

My favourite Star Trek fact is that because the Enterprise bridge has its turbolift to the SIDE, but that turbolift is directly BEHIND the bridge on exterior of the ship, the bridge crew are canonically sitting at a 36 degree angle from the direction they're actually heading.

ETA: The thread on how this was determined is a great example of what's been discussed in the last page or so.

There is way too much Star Trek talk in the Star Wars thread.

Time to start debating a Star Destroyer against the Enterprise...
Uh oh, I ruined the thread again didn't I?
The Galactica would take 'em both.

Nope, never ever touch this debate. Trek fans get all out of shape on phasers versus Turbo Lasers. Star Wars fans get all out of shape on hyper matter versus anti-matter.
In the end its a brawl that ends with oh yeah while Vader can force choke picard from across the galaxy.
Nope Nope Nope Nope Nope.

The Expanse ruined sci-fi space stories for me with its attention to detail about physics.

I often think about Naren Shankar co-showran The Expanse but was also theoretically the Star Trek TNG and Voyager science advisor. A very thankless role judging by the work haha.
