Best of 3 is so short and not really right for baseball IMO. Rays season suddenly on the ropes.

Runners at the corners for the Brewers in the bottom of the first inning of a scoreless tie.

Nice comeback by the Diamondbacks. It was 3-0 Brewers and Arizonavhas tied it up now in the third inning.

The AL Wild Card Series opener between the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays drew an announced crowd of just 19,704 to Tropicana Field on Tuesday, the lowest for a postseason game since the 1919 World Series other than during the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Quote:
Game 7 of the 1919 World Series drew 13,923 at Redland Field in Cincinnati; the Reds won the best-of-nine series against the Chicago White Sox in eight games, but Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banned eight players on the "Black Sox" for life for throwing games.
Montreal HAS to be a better market....that is abysmal.

That's just how baseball is. There's no time to play into November. Thus it rewards the top 2 teams as they avoid the best of 3.

Even in Japan, the first round is best of 3, has been for 20 years.

Game 2 of each series
The Rangers, Diamondbacks, and Phillies lead their respective series 1-0.

Why was attendance so low for a playoff game? Any insight?

I would imagine a combination of crappy stadium + crappy start time + not really the playoffs (in fans minds).

Crappy location as well. New stadium is being built in the same spot so attendance woes will probably continue even with the new building.

It is really disappointing that they decided to put the new stadium there. It's also a shame about the attendance overall since the team is really good and competitive most years.

I went to a game there in 2015 (against the Jays). Some of my takeaways:

* I was staying in Tampa and, man, was it ever far away. $40 Uber if I remember right. Probably quite a bit more now since that was 8 years ago

* Oddly, even though it's kind of in downtown St. Pete (I think?) there wasn't a lot open in terms of grabbing a bite to eat or drink before the game. I found a decent sandwich place but it also closed at 6 PM even though the game was at 7.

* First pitch of the first game, Jose Reyes swung and missed and his bat flew into the stands and crippled a guy who had to go to the hospital a few rows below me

* I remember telling myself I wanted to try some of the concessions after the sixth inning (since I ate before the game). There was a grilled cheese stand that I eyed up but I was surprised to see that it was closed already at that point in the game

* I think it was Osuna's first-ever save with the Jays or one of his first

It's a bad start time in a bad stadium that's not easy to get to. Than factor in some fan complacency with a team that makes the playoffs quite frequently but really has not won much in the post season. Montreal had similar issues with a bad stadium that was not easy to get to. Just that the Expos never really made the post season except for 81. I'm sure the same thing would happen there if the Expos were still there and had like 10 post season appearances in 15 years and no WS wins.

It's bad, but there are some underlying reasons for it.
