That does at least cover some ESPN years - its not just OLN/Versus/NBCSN games.

Although I do wonder if some of the game 1s were on ABC - as 2002 was Colorado-Detroit. And there was a Dallas-Colorado and St.Louis-Colorado in there as well.

not even close to the highest rated game

Blues/Bruins game 7 had almost 9M viewers...this had 1.8. I know these stats because some Oiler fan on here was going on about "nobody wanting to watch the Blues hook and hold their way to a cup"
Guess the Avalanche must have a huge following

Ain't nobody wants to watch the Oilers dive and embellish their way to a cup!!!

One has to wonder how much better it would have been for the league for McDavid to be drafted by an american team. I'm sure the Avs are a pretty good draw but clearly McDavid plays a big role in these ratings.

Most of those series started on a Saturday - so they were probably on ABC. So its very likely the first non-NBCSN/Versus/OLN Western Conference since 1999.

Western conference final game 1. Boston / St.Louis would have been finals.

You can generate a good stat to generate faux excitement by narrowing the goalposts enough doing anything.

“This is the highest rated game on May 31 with a 7pm start time in the last 10 yrs and with at least 7 people named Jim in the building!”

Long term, pro sports may be doomed anyways if young people don't support it. I wouldn't be surprised if the major leagues were all projecting major downturns in 10-20 years and the most financially sound decision is to squeeze the fans as much as possible until then.

You guys obviously know how big a fan I am...I have three kids and none of them really care about the NHL

They have a passing interest but certainly don't live and die with the results. They wouldn't spend a few hundred of their own money to watch a game. Them and their friends aren't glued to the playoffs like my buddies and I back in the day....there are just so many options. They can basically watch or listen to any media ever created at any time. I think pro sports as we know it is on the way out...average fan is old balls and not getting any younger.

Everyone I work with is also either US, UK, or Macedonia...Not one of them knows the name Connor McDavid, a couple would know Wayne Gretzky

My son would never sit in front of a tv for 2.5 hours to watch a game. He’ll go to Flames games with me and really enjoy it, but thats me parting with the money. If he had to bear the cost, he’d probably never set foot in the dome again.

The world has changed and is unrecognisable from my childhood where there were on-two games on tv per week and then you’d get so excited that hockey was on nearly every day when the playoffs started.

For me, its still number one, but this really was a kick in the gut. I’ll be back for the Flames, but when their interest ends in the NHL, so does mine.

Agreed the problem is also exacerbated for young people when they find out there's no integrity with the sport / league.

It's like when you're a kid and find out pro wrestling is fake, it's not really interesting after that. At least to me it wasn't. There is something to be said about actual competition and sport that makes the unlikely things that inevitably happen that much special and memorable. They don't need to be manufactured, and it cheapens the entire experience.

I think younger people want more authenticity in things, and who can blame them. NHL needs to think long-term or suffer the consequences. This is like Blockbuster stuff for them here, they have a limited window to figure it out.

Pro wrestling isn't fake...it just has pre-determined outcomes...like pro hockey.

I don't watch after the Flames are done.
Has their been a reviewed goal in the league in the past 7 days of any variety?

I fully expect a change in the the rule...but I still haven't heard an explanation for how the league can call and review that without the Oilers risking anything (nevermind they had no intent on reviewing, it appeared).

The only play that has been reviewed was an offside which was onside, for what has seemed to be 7 days.

Hopefully more pro wrestling rubs off on the NHL so that interviews aren't so F'ing dry.

My son is mini-me.

He and his friends got together for every single Flames playoff game all decked out in jerseys and cheering his brains out.

He doesn't have the money to go to games on his own, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was a season ticket holder some day.

His Flames playoffs at 20 looked a heck of a lot like mine at 19.

Young people have lots of other things to do and can't sit through a 2.5 hour game... this just in. And then you know what happens? They get older and their interests evolve. And so do their finances.

Rumours of the death of sports are greatly exaggerated, IMO.
