No. Demelo was showing he was going in the direction toward the net. Lucic make the intention clear he was checking the body.
As Lucic commits to the hit, Demelo tried to be cute and change it up. You can’t stop a freight train and you pay the price.
Bieksa honestly had great analysis of the hit.

Well the 4 different replay options weren’t helping apparently.

Honestly it doesn't matter either way. It's not like this is Lindholm or Tkachuk. Maybe adam ruzicka or however you spell it will get in a game or two while Lucic rests.

Their pk has been great. Doesn't make me sweat as much this season. It's the sloppy d zone stuff that worries me. Just get it out.

If Kylington, I'm annoyed that he made a stupid play. You don't want to see a guy injured, and I hope he's okay, but you have to protect yourself.
|
He checked his shoulder to see if anyone was incoming, then proceeded to play the puck. Whether he recognized it was Lucic or not, he didn't and shouldn't expect being plowed from behind.
The onus is on Lucic in this situation, and his punishment is commensurate.

Monahan, Dube, Coleman, Backlund. One of these guys needs to provide some secondary scoring. This period would be a good time.

Demelo did himself 0 favors. 0 iq play.
2 minute penalty. Refs suck as always.

Well, I have a hunch the Flames will come out flying because of their respect for Lucic.

Pretty sure DOPS puts the onus on the hitter to avoid the hittee waking up in a hospital. So if you are a big guy bearing down on a smaller guy like that you should definitely still finish your check but try not to slam a guy clean through the boards like that, particularly considering the size & weight difference.

Lucics angle of attack changes a lot more than Demelo.
Demelo is skating towards the endboards the entire time and going directly into the wall. His skates point towards the net for a second but his general direction of motion is always going the same way right into the corner.
Lucic changes his angle. In the first two screens Lucic is skating more towards the corner and coming from an angle (Toes of his skates pointing towards the cameraman)l, in the last screenshot his angle of attack changes (toes of skates towards the end boards).
It’s a bad hit that Lucic shouldn’t have made. Not sure it’s worth 5 but when a guys head hits the dasher and he leaves the ice bleeding it’s going to be tough.
Lots of rose coloured glasses in here tonight.

Demelo tried to fake out Lucic. It was a horrible attempt and he got murdered. Lucic got caught in a bad situation and had to get penalized because the NHL wants the heavy contact out of the game. Dont understand the 5. It should've been 2. It sucks big time, but thankfully the Flames killed it off. We see it all the time in the NFL. Sometimes players get caught in bad situations and you just have to call it.

The game happens at high speed.
The images above clearly show the Lucic was coming in to left shoulder and the Jet turned to his right skate edges to present his back which switching directions back up the boards.
Should Lucic still have let up, sure. Is it a penalty, sure.
But it's easy to see why Lucic came in expecting a left shoulder point of contact and why the defencemen put himself in a dangerous position as Bieksa illustrated.

Am I crazy, or does the camera man seems like they're having trouble tracking the puck tonight.
