Well he did lose his man in front of the net. If he was not supposed to cover him and/or stop that pass, what other purpose was he serving in front of the net?
And agreed that Valimaki has not stolen a spot a la Kylington, but certainly he is a reasonable alternative.

The Flames had the puck. You don't actively check opposing players when your teammate is on possession of the puck.

I suppose we have different views of a defenceman's responsibility when there is a puck battle in the corner. It's possible for multiple players to make a poor play on a goal against, in fact that is typically the case
