Interesting is that his production is top 10 pick level but people are concerned about his line mates being the play driver. Watched some video of him today and it didn’t seem like he was a product of his line mates to me.
In the last 5 years only eight U-18 forwards put up over 1.2 PPG in the WHL
Patrick - 1.42
Glass - 1.36
Barzal - 1.30
Point - 1.26
Merkley - 1.25
Yamamoto - 1.25
Cozens - 1.24
Tracey - 1.23
Tracey was the only one to do it in his rookie season in the WHL - for the rest it was the 2nd or 3rd year in the league.
Feels like he might be a bit underrated just because he was such a big riser this year.

Tracey, hopefully , or Robertson would be fine, at 26.

When you're drafting at #26 (even in a good draft) you're taking a player that optimistically projects to be entering the NHL lineup in roughly four years. College, major junior, maybe a year in the AHL.
Flames' needs will be very different then. Say the team gives Hamonic an extension. Gio will likely be gone by then. Even components of the youthful core we have now will be altered.
Take the best player available of course, but it's not a bad strategy to be building a team from the blueline out.

It also plays to the franchise's recent success with scouting AND developing defencemen compared to forwards.

Only have two names that have jumped out at me who I hope might be called by the Flames. Samuel Poulin as a faller, and Brett Leason as a riser. A big RW who can finish would be a nice add to our depleted system. Beyond that, I don’t care, so long as the players have some size and foot speed.

There are also the issues that his skating and foot speed is average or below and that he shies away from areas where he would have to compete and battle for the puck.
I would prefer Tomasino, Poulin, or Beecher

wow, I totally forgot Nolan Foote was in this draft. I thought he was a sure bet mid first rounder, but now looks like a guy who may not even get drafted until the second round?!?

Just as an example I got him at #54 in the CPHL draft.

Tod Button mentioned during his interview on the Fan960 yesterday that there is one D in the top ten he expects to be taken, outside of that there could be a run on them in the teens.

I had to read this sentence three times...
Did he mean that he expects only one defenseman selected in the top ten today with a run of blueliners then picked in the teens?

I think you can lock Broberg and Byram in the top ten tonight. Then about 5 to 7 before the Flames pick.

I think we could see Soderstrom as well, he's another solid 2-way RHS Dman.

Q: Looking specifically at this year, what would you say are the strengths of the 2019 NHL Draft class?
Button: “I think it’s forward-heavy early, then there are a ton of defencemen and then there’s a good mix after that. Now, when I say forward-heavy early, it wouldn’t surprise me if nine of the top-10 were forwards this year. And then I think maybe you might have 60% or 70% of the next 15 guys being defencemen. And after that, I think it’s wide-open — forwards, defencemen, and then there are some good goalies in there.
