I think it's a system thing. It worked with Hartley because Monahan would be farther up the ice and able to receive a pass right after Johnny spins but with Gulutzan Gaudreau's linemates are slower to come up the ice to Johnny has to try and burn a bit more time before someone is open. Usually a defender gets to him by then.
