Eric Duhatschek just made a good point when he mentioned that last year St. Louis thought enough of Brouwer and the intangibles that he brings to give up TJ Oshie for him. Believes he's a highly regarded player for what he brings to the table and we saw that in the playoffs.

Yup. I was just stating the case some people are making.

I will personally wait to see what happens next season.

I don't think it is in regards to 2nd or 3rd line but more to keep Frolik and Backs together. However, I think to start the season may be ok and if necessary Chiasson will probably switch down and Frolik up to the 2nd, Brouwer on the 1st or 2nd could be money.

People definitely need to stop thinking of lines as 1-2-3.

Look at the Pens, Kessel is a 3rd line winger now? Yeah, that's not how that works.

They wanted to but there's this thing called the salary cap. They also have a bigger team than the flames who need Brroueer more and thats why they paid more for him. Market economics.

Really have no idea what St. Louis's plan and cap implications are, but it's an entirely different scenario from ours.

Army on Brouwer: "Met with Troy's representatives, and we made what we felt was a strong offer and it didn't get the deal done."

Brouwer clearly needed a bigger offer from STL for that option to out weigh Calgary where he has family and is already building a home.

No idea why a few people were freaking out about this one. Brouwer is exactly the player we needed and should be a great fit. Of course we would all prefer the deal to be 3x4m, but I can live with 4x4.5m just fine for what he brings. I expect him to play with either Monny or Bennett, so 20 goals seems very realistic.

The money is high, but term is great. Four years is very reasonable, and he will be serviceable for at least 3 of those years.

Worse comes to worse we buy out year 4.

One of the better UFA signings of the day. This is the grit and the toughness that we need in our top 6.

Agreed! Even if he's a 4th liner in year four that's reasonable, think it's much better than the Wideman contract especially no NMC/NTC required to sign him.

There has to be a lot of that going around.

There was a lot of understanding about not paying too much for secondary players (Colborne discussions) and boom a 4.5M secondary player with a career high 43 pts.

Nice player to have.... might be what Ferland grows up to be. Fills more of a need on the Flames than Frolik did.

---- Longer term impact -----

Is this team going to challenge for the SC this year?

In 4 years: 2019-20 year 7 of the rebuild the Flames have locked up

Brouwer 4.5, Frolik 4.3 Gio 6.75 Hamilton 5.75 Brodie 4.65 total 25.95

add in Monahan and Gaudreau for 15.05 and we have 7 players tied up for 41M. if Elliot is 80% of what we hope add another 5M

46 M for 8 players Say the cap goes up 3 M per yr the cap will be 82M..

Left 36m for 14-16 players 2.5M per player... If we want to keep Bennett and Backlund -- minimum 4M each 28M left for 12-14 players Average 2M each

That will be a lot cheap contracts playing with the team we have now. May as well win now.

Has more to do with keeping him with Backlund in a shutdown role, not really bumping him down the lineup or anything

This deal is great considering what the other guys were going for. I was hoping for 4x4. That 500k was expected once I started seeing the deals guys were getting.
