Maybe Calgary could build a package around Anton Babchuk.

Untouchables list for me
Giordano is probably pretty close to untouchable too, at least to Treliving, but you never know.

Lots of talk that the Wild's in on Travis Hamonic, the top-4 Islanders defenseman who asked to be traded before the season due to a family matter (as first reported by Elliotte Friedman). I talked with folks inside the Wild before the game, and there's little doubt that Islanders GM Garth Snow has talked to Wild GM Chuck Fletcher lately. But my understanding is Fletcher has yet to talk to agent Kevin Epp, and the Wild would want to know the reason Hamonic wants to be moved.
Regardless, the Wild's at the cap, has a deep, expensive blue line as it is and can't just take on a player making a little under $4 million without giving up a significant salary. Also, Fletcher's first priority I'm told if he were to make trades right now would be to add up front, not on the back end.
The Islanders would want a similar top-4 defenseman if it were to trade Hamonic, according to the respected TSN guys Darren Dreger, Bob McKenzie and Pierre LeBrun. That would have to mean Jonas Brodin, Marco Scandella or Jared Spurgeon (unless the Wild was willing to trade Mike Reilly or Olofsson, although that wouldn't make the money work for Minnesota). I just don't know if Fletcher would be willing to go there. Spurgeon is indeed in the last year of his deal and will warrant a big raise, maybe one the Wild can't afford. But he is unrestriced in two summers, and would the Islanders really risk trading Hamonic for Spurgeon, a guy they threw in the garbage once upon a time and a guy that maybe not be willing to sign long-term there because of it.
We'll see if this heads anywhere, but as of now, the Wild indicated that it hasn't even been given an asset price for Hamonic and nothing is close.

I thought it was an interesting read, considering yesterday all the insiders were proclaiming the Wild as a good fit and real contender to land Hamonic.
The last line especially. The Wild/Islanders haven't talked about cost yet. Huge sign this is going to drag out a long time.
edit: Also interesting that the Wild aren't even sure Hamonic wants to come to Minnesota yet.

Adrian Dater @adater
Hearing that, if Avs were to land Hamonic, prospect Chris Bigras would be on Isles' ask list.

The only US city I can see making the list are the Wild. I can't see the Avs being close enough to home or having enough flights.
I think he eventually ends up where he wants which is Winnipeg

I was listening to the Steve Dangle podcast and they were talking what if the Islanders traded Harmonic for Russell or perhaps Harmonic for Wideman. Russell is a decent one because he's a UFA and increases the Islanders cap space in case they want to make additions at the deadline for a playoff push.

So they'd give up Hamonic for a few months of Russell?

Well, now that I've had a couple of days to digest the rumour, and think about it, I'm going to say I've changed my mind on the whole thing. I don't think I'd do a Gio for Hamonic swap. I think Gio's too important to the organization, and I don't think Hamonic is good enough to fetch a a Gio calibre player.
Hamonic would be fantastic to have as one of our top 4, but he's behind Brodie, Hamilton, and Gio on the depth chart.

There have been a few people on the FAN talking about Hamonic and his value being heightened because he is one of the only names out there. He is a very good 3-4 is how he has been described. Russell obviously is not enough or that deal would be done by now

Russell has to be signed to a decent contract and why would he do that to help the Flames get Hamonic?
Russell's agent knows what's going on. Unless Russell wants to be in Brooklyn, he might as well go to FA and get top dollar.

Since it appears that his desire is to be near Winnipeg and locations like Calgary and Edmonton apparently fit the bill as being close enough (taking into consideration non-stop flights to and from), I'm surprised that we haven't heard that Toronto or Chicago are options, as well. Both cities offer non-stop flights to Winnipeg and are just a little bit longer of flight times than those to Calgary and Edmonton.

I would like to see Calgary build a package around Ian White.
Maybe include Nik Hagman to sweeten the deal.

Maybe he has family in western Canada that would allow them to get to his games much easier as opposed to flying all the way across Canada? Maybe someone here with more know about Hamonic could fill us in if that's the case.
