I'd bet the sabres would take Reinhart over Ekblad anyway but if we finished with the5th pic and the oilers finished lower than I'd give whatever it takes other than monahan to move up

It's all about relative value. Both Dal Colle and Reinhart are in the same ball park potential wise as Ekblad, so I'd take the two forwards over the D because the forwards are more guaranteed to reach their potential. However, if you're past that point where you're choosing between Draisaitl/Bennett and Ekblad, you go with Eks because his upside is higher.
You saw this last year, where all of Jones, Mac, Barkov, and Drouin were in the same ballpark potential wise as they all looked like top end 1st line talent. The three forwards all went first. Lindholm/Monahan/Nichushkin though all had some question marks on their overall potential, and were a step down from the other forwards, so despite the Preds already have a lot of good defensemen in their system, took Jones because he was the best relative to the place they were picking even though their forward group is worse than ours currently.

I don't think any scout is going to say 'ah these guys are all the same' potential wise. They are going to like who they like. You should take the guy you like best and not worry about history. Its a mistake to say well we like Ekblad a bit better but the history says he's more likely to bust so we'll take Reinhart.

That can't possibly be true. I've heard from credible sources that Burke is too busy with the US Olympic team to do anything GM related.

Burke must be racking up some serious airline reward points these last couple of months.

Here is a screenshot of the Blue Jackets list from the past draft... they have grouped a bunch of players into different priorities. Safe to say they thought they were all the similar potential wise:
Defining tiers/priorities/etc is a valuable tool when deciding whether you should trade down or up.

I'm sure they rank them in tiers.. but they also have numbers beside them of where they rank them.
I'd also argue that the lower you get in the draft the more likely you are to find similarly ranked guys... but when you're in the top 5 you need to find the one you like the best.

Interesting to see Petan in the 'special' category. He was one of the players, I was hoping the Flames would be able to steal in the draft.

It's all about making tiers and separating guys into rough potential groups, basically exactly what that spreadsheet from the Jackets above.
Last year, the Panthers really liked Barkov more so than either Drouin or Jones. The Lightning also preferred the forward over the D-man. That doesn't mean that the Flames would take Reinhart over Ekblad for sure. It would depend on what the scouts say. If they feel Ekblad is going to be all that and then some, by all means take him.

As in he was there for the 4 goal performance? I guarantee Burke does everything he can to draft Ekblad... It could be eerily similar to the 1993 draft.

that has to be a carryover from the Howsen days (which he obviously brought over from Edmonton). Essentially small skilled player.

Ekblad would be great for the Flames. If you can think of a perfect guy to pair with what Ekblad brings, it would be TJ Brodie
Sutter had him playing with Pouliout at the WJ's. They were a much better pairing than Dumba/Reinhart

Flames are closer to 30th than 27th now thanks to this horrible January. I do think the chances of drafting in the top 2 is very likely. I really hope we get Ekblad but would be happy with Reinhart I get the feeling if Burke wants Ekblad he will get him unless Edmonton picks 1st

Once the Flames ship off some or all of Stempniak, Stajan, and Cammalleri, the team will make a strong push for last place. It's shaping up to look like the Flamess will win the lottery (take Ekblad), or lose the lottery and draft 2nd overall and draft whomever Buffalo doesn't (Reinhart or Ekblad). I'm pretty confident the Flames will end up with one of those two.

Kind of hoping the Flames win the Lottery and by default get two first round picks with NJ having to forfeit theirs. May not be a DEEP draft but whenever you can throw more high end mud at the wall the better.
