I don't see alot of baseless picking on. Their ideas are criticized and questioned. There are many conservatives who are well spoken and rational enough in their views that they are discussed with, I'm thinking Cowboy89 or 4x4 as ones that comes to mind. There are others that just post garbage. It isn't necessarily because they're conservative, it's because they show limited cognitive ability to understand the world around them. At least that's my read.
The bigger fact is: welcome to political discussion on the internet. If you can't stand the heat then what you start whining about it? There's a huge literature and philoshophy of conservative politics, back your case up. Woe is conservative Calgarian? Somewhere the world's smallest violin is playing Bach.

Two posters have now made the claim that conservatives are being insulted in this and other threads on this board. I have just carefully reviewed all 424 posts in this thread, and leaving out insults of public political figures, here is what I found:
2 instances of conservative posters insulting liberal posters.
3 instances of liberal posters insulting conservative posters, 1 of which was Slava's remark about "trolling," which was really pretty mild.
That's in 424 posts. I have to say I think that's pretty good, but obviously the aim here is to foster respectful discussion. If you see a post that you think is over the line, please report it and the mods will respond appropriately.

On another note, Joan Crockatt volunteers just came and knocked on my door. They seemed like nice folks.

I don't buy the idea that the liberal is leading, the fact is that Chris Turner has en excellent chance to win and could be the next leader of the greens. I think Joan and her comments on the Nexen/CNOOC deal, as well as her comments on the US economy tells me she has no idea what she is talking about.
For me the protest vote is to move to Chris Turner, the fact is that the Liberals are really only an eastern regional version of the tories, the liberals are a nominally centrist party that hates Alberta.

What did she say about Nexen/CNOOC?
I'm curious, partly because my guess is that Harper would prefer no-one to say anything at all about that until he makes a decision.

I had Dan Meades knock on my door last night. Also seemed like a nice guy from our 2 minute conversation. Not going to vote for him, but having someone who has an eye out of poverty reduction is never a bad thing. This neighborhood does have a lot of hobos and transients that with added attention could definitely make a visible "quality of life" improvement.

I'm always nice to doorknockers, regardless of what party they are with. I figure they get enough abuse at other doors, and anyway they are generally nice, passionate and engaged people who are volunteering their time for something they believe in.
They did seem a little puzzled that I wasn't a
supporter though--I was clearly on their list.

A vote for the Liberals is a vote for a party that couldn't care less about the people of Alberta. They are only interested in taking as much money out of the province as possible. Trudeau's bigoted comments about Alberta were 2 years ago, but he still believes it today. Only the naive wouldn't believe that. Would you vote for a party where most of it's base and it's future leader despises Alberta?

Well that dynamic would certainly change if there were any Alberta caucus members. It goes two ways. Albertans turned their back on a party and the party turned their back on them, in whatever order you want to argue happened.
Problem with Alberta is that it's a fast growing, affluent, cosmopolitan province with significant social, economic and environmental issues that it must face. The provincial political mono-culture is arguably not in the best interest of the province and by voting, as a block for the same politicians and ideology each and every time necessary political debate, compromise and new ideas are being eschewed away.
I'm not saying that a vote for the Liberals will change all of this. But the province is also not doing itself any favours by rigidly clinging to a one party state.

I get this feeling from the Cons as well. That's why I'm hoping we can tell them that we'd even rather have the guys who hate us than the guys who ignore us. Then next time around they'll actually think of showing up for the election.

Can you name three new policies introduced during the Chretien/Martin Liberal governments of 1993-2006 that were specifically designed to take as much money out of Alberta as possible? How about even one?

So it needs to be asked, but were there any cp people at the debate today and did Crockatt actually google the answer for the statesman of the year award like it was mentioned online.

The NDP candidate just came through my apartment building. He must of buzzed a few suites to let him in, since he tried to buzz mine, and I received no response once I went to check who it was. I don't usually like listening to candidates trying to solicit my vote, so I just ignored the knock on my door.

I wasn't there but this "if you lose your passport would you rather call the Opposition MP or somebody that can go straight to the minister" that's all over twitter may highlight why the CPC doesn't send their candidates to these things.
I mean wow. Just wow.

What to do if you lose your passport: http://www.ppt.gc.ca/planification/203.aspx?lang=eng
Note: contact your MP (whether he or she is in opposition or is part of the government party and can escalate your issue to the Minister) is nowhere to be found on that page.

Although this does raise the question: does Crockatt actually think the role of an MP is to deal with minor issues from constituents like lost passports? That's the job for the civil service, not an elected official.

Here's the MP/Passport Quote:
Quote:
“If you’re in Mexico and you lose your passport, do you want to call an opposition member of Parliament? Or do you want to call someone who can walk across to the minister’s office?” said Crockatt.
|
and a small nod to the Google Quote
Quote:
Meades criticized Crockatt for only giving a one-sentence response to a question about foreign policy, when she said Prime Minister Stephen Harper was named World Statesman of the Year, but didn’t know what group awarded the title.
