Mar would be a disaster. I voted Horner but would be happy it's Redford.

Redford's counting on a lot of that kind of sentiment.

Doubtful. Both of the top two are very solid candidates.

Mar taking the MLA transition allowance after securing another government job right away (ambassador to the US) put supporters of the other candidates against him right from the start. He took the allowance he didn't need or deserve, and I do believe he lost the premiership as a result.

Lots of rumours on twitter that Redford pulled through on the 2nd ballot.

Mar camp wants clarity of some 2nd picks that put Redford over the top. Has delayed the official results. Room is flat as pancake. #pcldr

If Mar wins it's probably the best case scenario for the PC's but they will still be divided.

If Redford squeaks out a win on the preferential ballot then once again we will have a leader who won without the most votes and was backed by almost none of the sitting MLA's.

Before people jump all over me look at the turnout. Obviously lots of non PC'ers voted in this race yet the total number of votes is a little over half of 2006. The centre and centre-left are still behind the party but the right and centre-right have moved on. This party is now basically the same as the BC Liberals, a joining of Liberal and PC voters.

The next election could be interesting, as the PC's veer to the left I expect the Wildrose will easily become official opposition to a minority government. The PC's will need support from Libs and NDPs to keep confidence. Just a prediction.

So the Globe and Mail already declared Redford the winner. Is this official?

From what I can tell, it is not official & Mar's camp is asking for a recount.

On that note, I think I should go to bed.

Redford won. Such BS.

One person. One vote. This 2 votes "second choice" thing is BS. Whatever. This is me raging. With that, good night.

I congratulate Redford.

Would love to have seen Mar won, but it's the choice of two excellent candidates in the end.

I went down there and amongst several thoughts and comments.....

certain MLAs were white as a ghost with backing the wrong horse in the race. Others, were just plain classy (Hancock and Quest in particular) - good to see.

The demographic in the room was much different than when Stelmach won. What was old and white, was now young and ethnically much more diverse. I wonder if those who now have a taste of politics will stick around, or if this was a one time thing.

Mar and Horner gave very good, sincere speeches.

Redford's speech brought a fair bit of energy and warmth back into a room that had the life sucked out of it with the delay.

Who would have thought that "red neck Alberta", with it's oil and cowboys, would have a muslim mayor in Calgary and a female premier?

So, what would you have preferred? Another vote in two weeks with just Mar and Redford's names on the ballot, where everyone who voted for Horner today would have changed their votes, presumably to the person they selected as their second choice today, and the result would have been the same?

I don't believe party leaderships in Canada have ever been chosen in first-past-the-post votes, they're always a process of elimination like this. They could have done another run-off, but doing it the way they did streamlines the process and presumably yields the same result.

Amongst people I know and from some media reports, many people who otherwise wouldn't have voted got out to vote against Mar. His comments on healthcare, the transition allowance issue, and the fact that he came across as one of the good old boy Tories entrenched in government rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Gary came off as a greasy politician to many people.

Im hoping Redford's win will shake things up a bit. Forty years of government leads people to be too comfortable and almost feel they're entitled to govern. Too many long standing MPs and associated bureaucracy. Fresh blood will do the province good. It should also make the next election interesting with the Wild Rose angle.

Exactly, the only difference is that this would have been drawn out over another few weeks, subjecting us to more campaign garbage and wasted money.

Congrats to the Redford team, I was surprised to wake up and see she ended up winning (stopped watching when it looked like Mar had it early on).

This is based on the assumption that the current standards must apply. If the final ballot was to run 3 candidates and the highest tally won, it would force the members into actually making a choice - do they want to vote for somebody they like or against somebody they don't like. The current system allows for both options and I don't think that is a good way to go about it. To their credit, they used this to their advantage as I don't know a thing about her but just don't vote Mar...think of the kids! THINK OF THE KIDS!

I think she will find out pretty quickly that making the decisions is a tad more difficult than bitching about them.
