I just saw a clip of probably hundreds of people lined up in single file waiting to get into a store where they'd be allowed to purchase 10 items of their choice.
Kudos to the Japanese people for coming together during this tragedy. History shows that similar incidents in other countries don't fare the same and looters and thieves quickly do everything they can while people are vulnerable.
Haven't heard of any of these incidents so far.

So apparently the moon is going through a cycle where it's the closest it gets to Earth at any point in the last 18 years. Interesting given the number of Earthquakes.

Correlation does not equal causation.
I will let the astrophysicist say it.
From Neil DeGrasse Tyson
Interviewed often today. Press wants to blame Japanese quake on cosmos. The Moon is innocent. Blame plate tectonics. Period.

I won't get into a debate about it, because I don't know nearly enough . . .But the logic for the moon having something to do with it is certainly there. I've read a few things where scientists say it does have something to do with it.
The effect that the moon has is so small that having someone doing jumping jacks on the shore would have about the same if not more effect. The forces at play are extremely small.
It's coincidental, and definitely wasn't the cause.

As far as I have found, that map is BS, but 750 rads of exposure is basically a fatal amount of exposure, but it depends on how long you're being exposed.

Fanman, CET - Tucked the family away at the homestead (in Yamanashi) and made it out to Shanghai for a business trip. Behind the firewall - no FB or Twitter - just CP now. Appreciate any updates. Heard the rolling blackouts weren't that rolling and not very black. Wee bit of good news I guess.
If I was in Japan.....I would leave for a bit. At least until things cool down.
Things are nowhere near as bad as being let on by the media (especially the western media) who are angling for an every worse plight. From the speculation of looting on Friday (none), the China Syndrome (none) and CNN again today freaking out about a non-existant tsunami, people are coming through this tragedy in amazing fashion.
The reason for the ####ty reporting by news outlets in Japan is simple - very few, if any, have any competent people who understand the dynamics of the country (let alone the language) anymore. Most are flighted in from China, Hong Kong or other regional stops and they simply plain out miss things. Big things. That, and since they don't feel connected, turn themselves into speculators at the first drop of the hat (CNN is the worst at this by the way - the only thing they get right the first time is yesterday's news).
The rub, however, is that a lot of the folks posting here from Japan may not be temporary. If they're like me, it's hard to leave a place when it's home (and not to mention your home is there). Where would you go? The only thing to do is try and help out where you can.
Mind you, I say this from a hotel room in Shanghai but I'll be back on Thursday - not planning on staying away too long.

A buddy sent me this via e-mail. I have no idea how accurate it is. He said he got it off some other forums he goes to.
I have searched the Canadian news channels, etc, etc and I can't find any information about nuclear fallout and how it would affect people in Canada.
I can honestly say that this picture has me a little worried.
Don't worry as it's bull#### (BTW isn't Australia non-nuclear - sounds to me like an anti-nuke scaremonger group taking advantage of a catastrophe. At this point I'm ready to punch all of these people spreading misinformation (toxic rain, earthquake weapons, superduperfallout) in the face. Both explosions thus far have been hydrogen blasts, not core blasts. There has been some low level radiation but nothing like that would suggest.
I'm in China at the moment and can't get access to either google or Twitter, but if you do a search on "Twitter" and "radiation geiger counter Tokyo" you'll see there's been no change at all. (I believe someone is ustreaming it).
So, don't panic. And think before you post. Maps like the #### above make people's lives in affected areas harder. If you don't believe me, let me forward you calls from my mum....

^^I've heard the blackouts haven't been going as scheduled in a few places too. They just announced it last night and tried to put it into place today, so I'm sure there are a million details to work out in the plan. As for me, my area in Hiratsuka city was supposed to go down from 3:20-7pm but it never happened. Not sure why, so I'm trying to find out more detail now. A lot of the trains were down today and they didn't really have a proper amount of time to announce all the changes, so there were a lot of people that didn't go to work. Also many images on the news of long line-ups of people at train stations waiting for an announcement or maybe hoping the train would run for a short amount of time.
My wife went to a drugstore a few hours ago and they have started imposing the 10 item rule. There was a long line up, and they had people waiting in groups of about 10. So only 10 or so people in at a time, get your ten items, and then the next group goes. She didn't want to wait in line for a couple hours, and we have enough food for a few more days anyway so try again tomorrow. Also have to say how calm everyone is remaining, and everyone trying to be curteous for the most part. This rule doesn't seem to have been put in place at all stores yet, and probably the details vary from store to store or city to city.
Have to say the early warning system in place here is pretty amazing. There was a small quake this afternoon(registered at about 3 in Kanagawa), and the warning came up on the tv about 30secs to a minute before we felt it. Commodore, if you haven't heard any details, I wouldn't worry too much about the Fukushima reactor yet. Reactor #3 had an explosion today, but it was very similar to the situation with the #1. Unfortunately 7 workers there were killed today when it blew, probably working hard to keep it under control. Huge respect goes out to them, and thoughts go out to their families.
There are still a lot of emails going around on topics like nuclear fallout, acid rain, etc, some not so helpful. Seems like some people are trying to start a panic and some media outlets are sensationalizing certain stories more than they need to be. Especially about the nuclear reactors. A big kudos to the rescue teams and army here who have reached many people already. Also to all the foreign rescue teams who have arrived and begun their work. Last night on the tv they said they had rescued over 12000 people already which is awesome news.
