Oof. A brown suit can look just fine but a black dress shirt can never look anything but awful.

I did just order a white shirt and a black shirt, and wondering how to use the black shirt.

White dress shirts mean business but black dress shirts, at the other end of the spectrum—literally—give off wildly different vibes. In recent years, they've been relegated to backs of most men's closets on account of their sartorial associations with mobsters, stage hands, and Euro rave-goers. Plus, they can be hard to pull off.

To modernize the look, keep the foulard tie pattern, but lose the fedora, slim up your lapels and collar, and stick to colors in the red color family. (For whatever reason, blues, purples, and even yellow ties with a black shirt will make you look like you're in the ensemble of Guys & Dolls.)

The dark shirt look is inherently hard to pull off. I have a navy oxford which I am currently wearing with grey flannel trousers and a light grey cardigan (pretty sportswear from a brand named Snow Peak) with a pair of chunky Alden derbies.

Never mix brown and black.... Unless you want to look like a cockroach.

From my own, feminine perspective, the second guy pulls off the black shirt better. I like the coloured tie. I would guess the pocket square is what ties it all together; it appears to have black, brown and the turquoise on it.

Plus the rule that your shirt should not be darker than your suit. Unless you're either in high school, or you're David Beckham (or some other celeb that can rock anything).

I agree with the feminine perspective, but I still wouldn't do it.

Rule #2 of dressing has to be something like, dress so that women think you look good but never take a woman's taste as your own. Nobody - except for extremely handsome men who look good in anything - can pull off a black dress shirt.

Like of course Christian Bale and Javier Bardem can wear them. They could also wear Victorian frocks and look great.

Most of the times you can tell who gets dressed by their wife/girlfriend/mother.

I just got one a few weeks ago and I think it's great. I suppose that explains it though!

I have done the all-black/no tie Johny Cash and that was well received.

You have to be incredibly handsome to pull this off. Like Johnny Cash good looks.

Maybe that's you, but generally I find that in our casual society most people don't actually understand what "dressing well" looks like.

I've worn chinos and an oxford shirt under an army jacket and people asked me why I was so dressed up.

The black dress shirt with a jacket/blazer combo is usually pretty weird. But I find that black dress shirts in a more casual type of combo is pretty good. That also being said, black dress shirts are awesome for dandruff detection.

It just seems like every guy that wears a black shirt wears it with a solid coloured shiny tie, super skinny dress pants that don’t go past the guy’s ankles so he can show off his brightly coloured dress socks (or better yet that he’s so cool he doesn’t even wear socks), he wears a brightly coloured belt, fake llizard skin dress shoes that have that super pointy end to the shoe. Basically a Le Chateau mannequin look. It’s like the white Oakley and affliction shirt version of dress clothes.

That doesn’t make all black shirts bad, just people who wear it like above.

If you have a pet, black clothes can't be a thing anyways.

Any suggestions for a laptop/messenger/commuter bag? I need something to carry my #### with me when I commute but even the cheapest canvas bags I looked at were around $100 and anything resembling leather was $150-300. That seems like a lot for a bag to carry my lunch and a few other things. I actually don’t have a work computer so the laptop part is optional.

Using a backpack provides lots of room but seems like a pain on the train every day and isn’t the most fashionable choice.

Any suggestions? Amazon has tons of stuff that’s less than $100 and looks great in the pictures but I’m weary of buying total junk. I just want something nicer than a gym bag or backpack but isn’t gonna cost me a lot.

Check out the Coach outlet store in Crossiron Mills. But yeah, you're still probably going to have to spend a least $100 for a nice bag. You won't be buying a bag every year, though, so it'll be money well spent.
