I don't think coming from the GTA should matter.
Mike Richards was from Toronto and I remember him being very popular here.

Trust me, Rusic is good. He has an awesome sense of humor, and can carry the show. I am really excited that this is the choice to start fresh with.

Why should I spend 2 seconds listening to an easterners viewpoints out west in the first place? The last broadcaster I want hear hails from the Center of the Universe. We know neither Boomer or Warrener did.
|
When you put it this way, the hire does sound pretty ridiculous.
Just looking at his Twitter, I don't even see a single mention of hockey.

Boomer and Warrener made everyone sound funny. Those guys made a dead fish like "insider" Seraveli sound fun. Not the other way around.
Regards any media out of TO the pool is tainted politically in the downtown editorial offices and they all drink the same bathwater. Professional? Warrener was anything but polished and that's why he was liked. Boomer was a natural, from Winnipeg and all the special universities in the world can't teach it.
So no one out west qualifies? Lets bring in a TO gambling expert whose apparently a laugh riot according to the Sportnet employees promoting him? I guess your right we need more central Canada not less.

It was definitely a homage to Brady and Gronk's viral vid doing the exact same thing to the same tune that first year in Tampa. "We back". Which to me anyway, is clearly a message that they're coming back. It's gotta be a podcast.

However I think he mostly just does sports betting stuff now which I couldn't care less about.

Well whaddya know! I do think from what I’ve heard he’s pretty funny, and could do well, he is definitely closer to being Pinder than Boomer but I can see how it might work. Still not sure about Matt Rose, never found him particularly funny and his forced guffawing can really grate. I’ll probably give it a chance but still just waiting for the new Boomer/Pinder pod to start up.

i personally thought his voice sounded fine and he seemed to have some energy. i will also give him some time to get the lay of the land on the various local teams. i gues i do not expect him to be an expert, but rather to be a host & entertain and tee up the experts that call in
i recall boomer taking over after richards left and it did not sound promising initially for Boomer.

I think it’s easier for someone to learn about the team and city than learn to be entertaining. There must be thousands of hours over several years of Will Nault talking about the Flames and maybe 15 minutes of them would be entertaining.

Boomer Pinder and Warrener all admitted to opting out of attending games, fell asleep during games or outright forgot there was a game.
And honestly if a “few hundred thousands” Flames fans tuned in, they’d have the biggest market share in the city.

I think Boomer knows his stuff just as much as most of the others on the station. His strength was understanding that good radio requires the ability to maintain conversation as opposed to droning on about the 3rd line in Stockton. It’s why the younger personalities on the station aren’t as good. They can blather about minutiae but struggle to hold a relatable conversation.

You've nailed it. Boomer's big strength was keeping the show engaging to the listener. It's the constant banter he injects into the conversation, both when he's interviewing a guest, as well as when he's talking with his morning partners.
It's why the quality dips whenever he's on vacation. You can tell that Pinder being the more stats nerd, he's not able to carry the show as well as Boomer either IMO. And the newer guys are even more green at it. I guess this is both a natural skill as well as something maybe you can develop. I'm hoping the new host also has this ability.

I wonder what kind of guests Boomer and crew can bring in. I suppose those guests like Adnan Virk and Stephen Brunt are being paid to appear on the show, I wonder if Boomer's program can afford it. Or if Sportsnet block certain people like Friedman to become a content supplier for an ex-employee turned competitor...

I'm excited for this podcast. Boomer, Pinder, and Rhett uncensored could be great.

I've always wondered about this with podcasts. Are all their guests paid to appear? For many of the non-sports podcasts I listen to, many of their guests are friends in the industry or the social media space and don't get paid to appear as far as I know, and are there to also promote their own channel/podcast, etc. But with sports, I do wonder if it's different, especially with people who are in contracts with Rogers SN, or TSN, or whoever.

I'm sure friends of the show like Rob Ray, Brunt, ex-players, and any US media they can secure on the cheap. I imagine anyone on the RSN and TSN payrolls are not able to participate with any non-network podcasts. What's Bruce Dowbiggin doing these days?
