Apparently we almost had a British Airways A380 divert here last night, BA286 operating SFO-LHR started heading our way but ultimately ended up at YVR. We had very low ceilings and visibility, but apparently it was a big enough deal that they bypassed us for Vancouver. Anyone have details as to what happened?
Edit: Apparently 25(!) members of the crew became ill and were sent to Vancouver hospitals for smoke inhalation. All passengers are safe.

Calgary spent so much darn money on the cat 3 ILS for this exact purpose, and they said screw it and flew to YVR anyway.
In reality, had this been the same time next week with the new barn open, they'd have landed at YYC. I'll have to ask but I'd bet not having a gate was a factor.

Do we seriously not have an A380 tow bar in Calgary yet? That's like an Edmonton thing to do...

They were roughly over Swift Current when it happened, and literally overflew Calgary on the way to Vancouver. Edmonton and Winnipeg would have also been closer and (possible) had been able to accept the flight other than the ground handling aspect. YVR seems like an odd choice other than they currently support at BA A380 flight so would have the facilities for it. But on teh other hand if they are going that far with the diversion why not go back to Denver or even Seattle which would have been equally as close and saved the hassle of Customs etc. British Airways flies to both those cities too. Or maybe USCBP would have a different view of the flight as it did leave U.S. airspace.
neverless, interesting choice for a diversion although they would have their reasons for it.

Is that all it was? Heard this on the radio this morning. 660 News said they originally considered Calgary but the pilot realized we couldn't handle his airplane which I thought was odd due to the new runway. Then I thought maybe it was the new wing not open? But it was all because of a tow bar? Wow.

It probably wasn't just that, YEG has had a couple of A380 diversions and they do not have a tow bar for it either. I think the weather here played a factor, sure they could have landed no problem in that low vis on the new runway but in a somewhat emergency situation it would probably be quicker to taxi in at YVR instead of making your way through the fog at YYC. Just a guess though.

That A380 was cool to see at YVR this morning when I came in from YYC. First time to see it in person.

Yeah, I forgot about the damn towbar. Swissport here at YEG has one but apparently YYC doesn't.
The last couple A380 diversions here indeed did not go to the gate (we have an actual A380 gate and taxiways cleared for it) but we also have gigantic parking spaces on the main apron. I'd have to think that YEG will remain the preferred diversion even with the new barn, if it comes down to picking between the two unless distance to a trauma hospital is a factor in which case YEG fails bad.

I get a laugh out of all the media outlets instantly begging "Did U take this? May we have permission to use this video on all platforms and media in perpetuity blah blah blah?"
Somehow I don't think a "Yah sure dude" on Twitter is going told up in court as a proper copyright release.

So today is apparently the last day KLM operated a 747 into Princess Juliana Int'l in St . Martin. End of an era and of being able to witness one of the most awesome landings or takeoffs around.

And now a FedEx MD-10 in Fort Lauderdale has an issue, collapsed left gear, wing on fire complete with explosion from videos on Twitter right now.
Both pilots are safe.

As always... the drive to the airport is a bigger risk.

"Well Captain, the plane has been safely evacuated and everyone is accounted for. Now what?"
"We have to go pose in front of our bird."

No, those are the pilots for the next flight.
Missing wing? Meh, trim it out.
