That's probably as much as we could ask for in terms of a pure futures play. No one trades top 5 picks in the cap era, so I think it unlikely.
Getting Hotlz+Wright out of a Tkachuk trade would be pretty wonderful.
Agreed. This draft has a 2012 feel though and looking at that horrible top 4 Yakupov, Murray, Galchenyuk, Reinhart where all pretty much busted by their mid 20’s. 2nd overall doesn’t have the same cache as a typical year. If the Habs pass on Wright I would be more inclined for the Flames to take that package. I am more intrigued by Cooley than Slafovsky but he is more boom/bust but Wright feels like a safe pick but might only be a Nuge level player who is no Tkachuk

Wright has a good deal more defensive acumen to his game. Even back to his 16 year old season he was drawing more bergeron comparisons than pure offense.
I think Montreal will go with him, and I wouldn't take the offered package unless he was available at 2. IMO he's suffering from that 1st overall too much focus for too long syndrome.

I agree the Habs are locked in on Wright and they take him. So it comes down to the big winger or speedy center. Obviously I don’t think these guys are on the table but Lafreniere or Stuztle would be dream targets for Tkachuk if the flames decide they can afford both he and Johnny. Otherwise I think the Devils 2nd pick+ is a good target.
Flames keeping Johnny and losing Tkachuk stings but then Toffoli or Mangiapane move to the top line and hopefully the Flames acquire pieces who could be key players in the back half of Johnny’s extension which Cooley could be
People actually think these deals were agreed to but they were waiting for the finals to end?
That doesn't seem even remotely realistic to me.
Hopefully Im wrong
It really isn't realistic at all for two superstars. There's too many people involved and too much media in Canada for a superstar or two to get re-signed and just quietly shelve it until a later date, lol.
I would think if anything has been agreed to it would be announced this week. If that's not the case then hopefully the two parties are still going back and forth right on small details.
If it was "all about the money" he likely is already signed by the Flames. Flames can offer him 8 years. I doubt other teams will offer him 7x12 or 13 and beat the Flames' overall dollars which I think will come in at about $88 million.
I think he's evaluating his options to see what the best fit will be for him and his family. He might sacrifice and sign an $75-80 million contract if he feels the situation better suits him compared to Calgary, i.e.: playing in the East, or playing in a warm climate etc.
Therefore I predict he waits for UFA and tests the waters. He might find Calgary is the best fit for him and stays.

I can see a scenario though where Gross is holding out to the last moment to squeeze an additional $500K/year or so out of the Flames. I'm sure the Flames would love to have this done, especially before the draft, but that might not be of great concern to Gross. He's looking to get the best deal he can for his client and will probably use the leverage he has right up to the deadline unless Gaudreau says he's happy and ready to sign whatever it is the Flames have on the table.
Simply the cost of doing business/negotiating. That said, if Gaudreau intends to go to market, hopefully they can notify the Flames before the draft so they can move on to plan B. Wouldn't surprise me if that is what the Flames have asked and are probably already working on contingency plans.

I don't think it's that crazy. If a contract was signed but left unregistered until after the finals, there are only really three people that would need to keep their mouths shut; Treliving, Gaudreau, and Lewis Gross.
I guess it's debatable whether waiting until after the finals for releasing big news is actually a thing that teams do. I have heard that it happens, but would love to hear of some actual examples where it happened.

Ya if it's not this week then I think it's more than 50/50 he is leaving.

Cro, this isn't directed at you...just in general
Just read the bolded part. Professional athletes and their families for the most part are set for life. People are talking like if he doesn't maximize this contract, he'll be pumping gass in a few years. The poor guy may have to "make a sacrifice" and sign for $75-80 milion. If you could pick almost anywhere you want to live and work and raise a family and make 80 million or be stuck in one place that may not be your first choice for 8 years to make an extra 8 million or whatever it'll work out to. I get it, $8 million is a lot of money but for someone who will still be making around 80 million and has already made around 40 million to date, that 8 million isn't that important. Plus if he signs for 7 years in one place, he can still sign an 8th year later on...it likely won't be for the 8ish he isn't making now but it'll still be for something.
The guy will pick where he wants to play, location will mean everything. Plain and simple. He isn't poor. He has a lot of money. The one extra year or the 8 or 9 more million additional dollars on the career earnings won't matter. These elite guys want to make as much as they can but realistically the money doesn't matter too much. And if you think he is going to be hurting for that extra money, he must be doing something real dumb with his money and should probably move close to his parents so they can take care of him.

You never have enough money. His expenses are higher than a typical person. He also has families to take care off. They are not rich.
It’s a short career. Money is not the only thing but it’s a big one.

Well, no. I expect that both sides are inching toward middle ground as the UFA deadline approaches. The Flames have most likely not yet tabled their best offer.

That said, this is how I see this playing out. I still think there is a chance Gaudreau extends closely before UFA, but will most likely entertain other offers.

I expect the Flames already know whether Gaudreau is going to market.

Well, more would have to know, and likely more would know.
There would be more insiders at the Flames who would have to know (AGM, maybe owners etc.). I expect that Johnny would let his wife know where she'll be living for the next 8 years. And his parents.
If he's already signed, something would likely be getting out.

I think this is basically unfeasible. In the case of contract extensions, I tend to think the silence has less to do with the SCF, and much more to do with the fact that this negotiation—like almost all UFA negotiations—is going down to the wire, and there has been no great urgency to work things out up to this moment. That starts to change rather quickly—first with the Draft, and then hen with the UFA market opening.
