Buffalo’s best hope to win this trade is to do it in a similar way that Ottawa won the Karlsson trade or the way that Colorado won the duchene trade… the tough part is that those trades became wins for two reasons:
1. The first round picks were unprotected so they turned out to be higher than the teams acquiring the star players thought they would be… it was the picks that ended up the most valuable piece in the trade.
2. The star players became shells of their former selves fairly quickly after being traded.
Ottawa had a big playoff run so they thought they were a contender. They probably thought the pick they gave for duchene would end up being a mid to late first round pick… instead, it ended up being Bo Byram.
San Jose refused to believe the Stanley cup window on their old team had closed and they traded a first round pick that ended up being Tim Stutzle.
I think Buffalo is focusing too much on getting the A-level prospect from this trade (Zegras or Kakko for example). Teams are not likely to give that up for eichel along with first round picks considering his injury.
If I’m Kevin Adams, I focus on unprotected first round picks. The good thing for Buffalo is that some of the teams that are going after eichel could end up producing a high pick this year. For example, Anaheim could provide a high pick in 2022… the focus should be to make sure that pick is unprotected instead of trying to get Zegras from them. Still want to get some top prospects… just don’t sink any trades by demanding a blue-chip A+ level prospect.
I know picks are always considered “magic beans” but that’s what usually ends up turning into the best asset acquired when trading away a star player.

If unprotected firsts is the goal for Buffalo, I think Anaheim would probably drop out. With their poor season, Eakins as coach, and how early Zegras and Drysdale are in their development, I wouldn’t bank on them being a playoff team.
That might help Calgary’s odds though, especially if they view the next two years as needing to go all in.
RW depth is some of the worst in the NHL. No way is Coleman a 1st line player, and no way should Mangiapane be on the right side. Move Tkachuk for a RW or two and move Mangiapane back to the left side.
Backlund to Buffalo along with the whatever else we need to include amongst forwards not listed above and/or picks. They can have Backlund and our next 14 firsts, for all I care.
Edit: before people get too excited, the "14 firsts" is just an over-exaggeration in an attempt to make a point. I am not actually advocating giving up our next 14 first round picks.

It could. Calgary is an interesting choice from Buffalo’s perspective. It fits the bill in that it’s out west. It fits in that it is more likely to give up picks and young assets than some others that are in a rebuild (Columbus, NY and Anaheim).
But Calgary also could be a good fit for Buffalo because there is still a chance Calgary could be a team like San Jose or Ottawa were a few years ago… a team that is pushing their chips in on a risky trade that could turn badly and it did. Instead of the team moving from mediocre to a contender, it could go the other way like it did for those teams.
Missing eichel + Monahan for half the season could make a 2022 first round pick a top 10 pick (I seriously doubt that though). Or if the pick was pushed to 2023, by then Calgary could have had to trade tkachuk in order to make cap room for Gaudreau and mangiapane’s raises… all of a sudden the flames will have lost Monahan + tkachuk for eichel who could potentially never recover to the same level of player he was before his injury. All these things could turn the flames pick into a huge asset for Buffalo.
Note that I do not think all these bad turns of fate will happen to the flames if they acquire eichel. I’m optimistic that this team will have a great year… and an even better one with eichel. All I’m saying is that Buffalo would want to try to find a team that is willing to trade an unprotected first and there to be at least a chance that that pick could become something significant. I don’t think many of the other teams interested in eichel would unprotect their first since all of them seem to be in a rebuild (Columbus, Anaheim, NY). Calgary is virtually the only one of the rumoured teams in on eichel that is not in a rebuild… but they are in a state of flux as an organization that could go different directions depending on how things work out.

Curious. At this stage in the game, one would think Buffalo would be all over the heavily proposed deal that included Monahan, Dube, Zary and 2022 1st.
I would suspect that Calgary hasn't put an offer of this calibre forward. Dube and Zary are controllable young assets and the 1st rounder is a wildcard for draft lottery implications. One would think Monahan goes there and plays on the 1st line and boosts his trade stock and is flipped for more assets later. Hence Buffalo being all over this.
The silent market and the proposed December return date for Eichel post-surgery feels like Calgary may be out of the mix. This trade could have been made months ago and Eichel could have been available come October.

Because of all of the risks you have described I don’t think the Eichel trade is going to happen until after he has his surgery and they can prove he’s recovered. By then he will have almost missed 2 seasons.
Quite the gong show. Don’t think it’ll turn out well for any of the stakeholders.

Agreed. That’s what makes me think this trade offer has never been made. Rumour is that no team has come close to what Buffalo wants. That trade proposal is as close to 4 first round picks as I think Buffalo could get. The trade proposal from the flames at the moment is probably more like:
Monahan + Pelletier + 1st round pick.
Which is the equivalent of 3 first round picks.

Then BT should be fired. You have a chance to get a franchise altering young centre, if he has not tabled an offer of that kind of proposal but is just not going to move enough to get a deal done again show him the fn door already. I have a hard time believing he is that stubborn and clueless.

If acquiring Eichel a month ago would have cost Monahan + 1st round pick + Zary + Dube… but acquiring him this week for say Monahan + 1st round pick + Pelletier, would people still have that same sentiment? Obviously it’s all complete speculation as to costs but if the cost has come down and Treliving ended up pulling off the trade while giving up less, it will have been worth it I think.

Not specific to you, but this has been stated by others as well.
Why would any GM make a trade for Eichel when there are no guarantees that he is even close to the same player once he has had his surgery and rehabbed appropriately? I myself would want Tre fired if he did push in all of his chips just to get Eichel for the sake of getting him, not knowing what the player will be at the end of this ordeal.

I am almost positive Buffalo would be on Monahan's 10 team M-NTC so can't see him being part of a trade for Eichel. We would have to trade him to a third team and then include those picks as part of a bigger package for Eichel. Not an easy thing for Treliving to pull off.
Still the worst RW depth in the NHL. You've moved left shooting players over to the right side and out of position. Now the bad RW depth is just compounded by having ####ty depth at center and on LW. You can't just move players around the lineup thinking you've plugged holes, because you just create others where their strength was.

But your top 2 centers in this scenario are at least right hand shots and very dangerous ones at that.
I would take a flames top 6 of:
Gaudreau-Eichel-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-Lindholm-Coleman
All day long

I really don’t care who we give up to acquire this player, short of Johnny and Lindholm.
Everyone else, including Tkachuk, can be replaced.
