Points aren't the end all, Brad blew it because he and everyone else knew Johnny is the straw that stirs this teams offense yet likely didn't offer a contract in line of what Johnny was capable of, from what I heard Brad or possibly ownership baulked at something around $9m and Johnny decided to bet on himself and won. sometimes you have to take a chance on your star players and the Flames didn't do that with Johnny.
If Johnny leaves for nothing it's an epic failure plain and simple, for Brads sake it better have been ownership that allowed this.

Neither brad nor ownership “allowed” anything. The CBA allowed it and there’s not a goddamn thing Brad, ownership or anyone else could do to prevent Johnny from leaving if he so chooses. For all we know they offered him the max over 8 years, he could still say no and leave.
And no matter what kind of rumours you heard from the orange Julius guy, no reputable source has reported anything even suggesting that the flames or ownership had an opportunity to sign Johnny for $9m per and refused to do so.

I'd be willing to bet that the same vocal group that thinks that Treliving should be fired if Johnny decides to go back East, would have been calling for Treliving's head last offseason if he signed Johnny to a 8 x 10.0m contract after 49 pts in 56 GP and missing the playoffs.
I don't understand the negativity that pervades some fans

I have serious doubts that anyone ever "baulked" at anything last year. Rather, I suspect that both sides talked, both sides established the parameters of what they wanted in a deal, and both sides worked towards an agreement until they decided to suspend talks once the season started.

Why? Do you expect Treliving to be fired if Gaudreau accepts a deal with another team? Because if you do, I think you will end up being surprised when it doesn't happen if Gaudreau decides to play elsewhere. I suspect my own thinking is more in line with Flames ownership on this matter: that last summer the market value for Gaudreau was volatile and extremely difficult to pin down; extending a player coming off of a very poor season and with legitimate concerns about his game and his long-term projection is an extremely risky proposition. And, that Treliving has handled the situation just fine—I am sure that they appreciate how carefully he is weighing all the factors in the negotiations. He won't be in jeopardy of losing his job this summer, regardless of what happens with Gaudreau.
...Finally, there is nothing about this that is "plain and simple." Many of the reactive comments in this thread stem from the miscomprehension that this is a "plain and simple" process, with a "plain and simple" outcome.

If the option is to either keep Gaudreau and trade Tkachuk or let Gaudreau walk and attempt to sign Tkachuk then I hope for the first option.

It's tough. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. Which player is really worth it when it comes down to vying for a cup.

You are full of poop, if the Flames signed Gaudreau to 9x8 last summer you and the usual suspects would have been bitching about it.

I can't honestly think anyone on this site would have been upset. Maybe some concern on length but that would have made almost everyone happy

People would have been pleased he was signed, but would not have liked the length or the AAV.
Although it would have played out great.

I know it is just fans on a forum but I saw a Devils fan offer this for a signed Tkachuk (HFboards)
2OA pick, Holtz (2020 7th OA), Ty Smith (22 year old former 2018 1st rounder), 23 2nd round pick.
That is a hell of a package.

People actually think these deals were agreed to but they were waiting for the finals to end?
That doesn't seem even remotely realistic to me.
Hopefully Im wrong

That's probably as much as we could ask for in terms of a pure futures play. No one trades top 5 picks in the cap era, so I think it unlikely.
Getting Hotlz+Wright out of a Tkachuk trade would be pretty wonderful.

There is a flames fan on Twitter Moe who is giving me hope that Johnny is close or has agreed to sign. 4 days ago it was the eye emoji that comes out when something is going down, then a cryptic winking tweet when the Flames posted Johnny highlights a day later and this morning a pic with him and Johnny from who knows when. Could be all nothing but hopefully it is something
