By the way, I notice the youngest of those 19 roster players are 24 years old, and only four are 30 or older (including Landeskog). That's a team that should be exactly in its prime. If they somehow keep the band together, they'll be very good for about five years and then go to pieces like Humpty Dumpty.
|
Colorado also has 19 signed and that does not include in the count Landeskog and O'Connor. So, they either have 21 signed $3.9 mil space or LTIR players don't play, and they have 19 guys signed and $12 mil space.
Either way they could easily add way more than the Oilers did.
Nichushkin not included and that hurts them, but he wasn't there when they lost too and I believe if he was, Avs vs Panthers was the finals we should have seen.

I have no love for the Oilers and have had many interactions with people after the cup was handed out and it is always brings me joy when they don't get the response they thought they were going to get.

Report: Oilers, Bouchard unlikely to discuss extension this summer
Quote:
The Edmonton Oilers and star blue-liner Evan Bouchard are unlikely to begin discussions on a contract extension this offseason, according to The Athletic's Daniel Nugent-Bowman.
Bouchard became eligible to sign a new deal July 1 but is under contract for 2024-25 at a $3.9-million cap hit and can reach restricted free agency after the season.
The Oilers, currently without a general manager, are focused on extensions for Leon Draisaitl (2025 UFA) and Connor McDavid (2026 UFA), Nugent-Bowman reports.
Edmonton's two superstar forwards have strong cases to become the league's highest-paid players, but Bouchard is owed a significant raise as well. The 24-year-old ranked fourth among defensemen with 81 points last season and added 32 in the playoffs as the Oilers fell one win shy of the Stanley Cup.

Parekh is going to be better than Bouchard.

Bouchard on a team like the Flames is a 40 point 1 dimensional d man. On the Oilers, he is an 80 point 1 dimensional d man being carried by the PP. Connor has made him and Nurse a ton of cash.
I too have higher hopes for Parekh.

This. We’ve seen RNH get a 100 point season from that powerplay. Nurse used to be on that powerplay when he got his contract… only to be immediately taken off of it in place of Tyson Barrie the next year. Then Bouchard took over.

I look forward to when both Drai and McDavid bolt, then the Oilers are stuck with a $10M dman that only puts up 30 points without those guys.

The Oilers for all of their gaudy signings are heading into a sweat inducing year next year.
Lets say that they resign Boingboing and Holloway to fairly cheap 1.5 million dollar contracts each.
then for next year they are already 5.5 million over the cap. Now we know that the likely strat is to put Kane on LTIR, but how's he going to feel about that? And will the league allow something this blatant (probably).
But that would leave them in a theoretical situation where they have 26.6 in cap space for the year after next with 14 players under contract.
And lets say that Draisaitl does agree to a discounted 14 million dollar deal (unlikely). that then leaves 12 million with 15 players. There's no way that Bouchard doesn't demand a huge raise, based on how the Oilers value him, and he's probably going to look at Nurse's deal as guidance. So they sign him in theory to a 9 million dollar deal. So now they're down to 5 million with 16 players.
Now lets say that Draisaitl is determined to explore free agency, or decides hey man I want to be the highest paid player in the league to pave the way for my Buddy Conna. And the Oilers are in a playoff spot by the trade deadline. Do they risk losing Draisaitl for nothing to pursue the Cup, knowing that the destruction of their franchise will follow whether they win the cup on not?
I'm convinced that the signing of these senior citizens, isn't about anything more then panic, of taking a shot at the cup in the last year of their window.

This morning Seravalli proclaimed that this is the best Oiler top 6 since the 80's.
that might even be true, except they are old, tired and without a championship

And their uberstar in Draisaitl fell apart in the finals, and McDavid went off the radar for the last two games.

I'd rather a 30+ year old Draisaitl is still there eating up $15+ million AAV without McDavid.

McDavid and Draisaitl have a lot of miles on them compared to most forwards their age. Both were absolutely gassed in the finals. I don't worry about McDavid so much because of his wheels but you have to wonder about Draisaitl when he gets into his 30's.

I think they both have ~4 more years of dominant offensive production left before they "regress" to 80-90 point play that won't be worth $13-15M per year they will get. Both players are going to lose a step and at that point it becomes a career of how can you change your game and still be effective. It is also pretty unlikely that both continue to get through long seasons relatively healthy as often as they have with all the mileage on their bodies.
Please go ahead and sign them both Edmonton. They are probably still both excellent players for the contract, but I can't see them carrying a team through the playoffs at that point and they'll have to with a third of the cap tied up between them.

Yep. The media can keep pumping the tires. We know how well that usually works out when your team is supposed to be a juggernaut all offseason.
They still have nothing to show for all their talent all these years and as you say are going to be beat up and worn out to start the year. It's also highly unlikely that they get to play LA and Vancouver (with an AHL goalie) in the first two rounds ever again.
Let's see how the greasers do going through Vegas, Colorado and Dallas or some iteration of that.

His strength and size will get him points in his 30s but he won't be as good. I don't think he will age well, and I think that decline will start very soon.

As long as they are in Edmonton they'll be ridden very hard and put away very wet with lots of hard miles on both of em.
