At this point the deal is Hanifin+Lindholm for Mads Sogaard and Noel Gunler
From an asset point of view that's where it is. And that's not spinning things because at the time the deal was made, it was pointed out that the deal had massive contractual advantages for the Flames.

Huh. I was watching Fox last night and couldn't remember what we got for him. I had forgotten he was a part of this deal.
Getting your #2 D and #1 C for an inconsistent D-man with a very high ceiling, third line winger, and a 3rd rounder who you know won't sign for you is a hell of a trade.

As good as Fox is he only had 5 more evp than Hanifin
Hanifin is a better defender fox is better on the pp.
It’s also amazing how the media evaluates trades they seem to evaluate the now over what a trade looks like over the next 5 years or more.
Team control and contracts just don’t get enough value put in when evaluating trades. Fox is about to have his $9.5 mil extension kick in. Hamilton makes $9. You can make a case even if the Flames could have signed Fox the deal is still a good one. Lindholm is a superstar at less than $5 mil. Hanifin is a star at less than $5 mil. Both for 2 more years. These contracts are critical to a team wanting to keep guys like Gaudreau and Tkachuk

Fox is significantly better than Hanifin.
There is no comparison
The Flames would do that deal again though 100%

When I think of Adam Fox, I think of Steve Francis when at the time the Vancouver Grizzlies drafted him, and the HUGE pouty lips he showed off. What a baby!

I would argue that Lindholm is the best player in the trade.
And then you have to factor 2 more years at $4.85M for Lindholm vs $9.5M for Fox

Dare to dream. But it would improve the oilers significantly so forget that. I want the oilers to fall more than I want Fox to be miserable

I know we've been through this a lot, but I still don't believe that Fox added much value to the deal at the time. I think everyone knew that he was never going to sign a contract with the Flames and Carolina likely knew it was a crap shoot for them at best. It kind of like teams trading for UFA rights. In my opinion, Fox was probably equal value to a mid-round pick to Carolina due to his desire to only sign in one place and he was basically a lotto ticket. His value to the Flames was probably zilch at the time.

The linked article refutes this
The Flames knew Fox would never sign with them. Treliving didn’t want to include him in the Hurricanes deal because he wanted to trade Fox in a separate deal and get more for him. But Waddell insisted on Fox being part of the deal because he met the player’s agent, Matt Keator, at the draft and was at least told the Canes would have a chance with FOx

It doesn't say anything about what his equivalent added value to the deal though. They figured they had a chance to sign him, but how much value do you put on a "chance"? The Rangers on the other hand knew they could sign him and were likely willing to pay a lot more for that chance instead of having to wait.
If the Flames had never drafted Fox I doubt this deal still doesn't get done. Carolina insisted on adding him because we had him and they knew they could leverage that due to him not wanting to sign in Calgary.

Well with everyone in hockey knowing he would only play in NYC he still fetched a 2nd and 3rd from the Rangers. Which is a reasonable consolation prize. Certainly value.

Value to the Rangers, sure. But value to the Canes at the time of the Hamilton deal? If they were going to acquire Fox straight up on a "chance" they could sign him, I doubt they valued the chance the same the Rangers did a sure thing. I am saying, at the time of the Hamilton trade, how much value did he have to the Canes and Flames? Somewhere between zero and a 2nd + 3rd rounder being the high mark. I just doubt it was close to the high mark at that point. I could be wrong.

Except the Canes insisted he be in the deal so it seems like it played a crucial role in getting it done

Still a good move by the Flames to draft Fox while all along knowing he won’t sign here. They knew he was a good player and took the best player available, sticking to their draft strategy.
I see a bit of criticism on here for Hanifin but he’s a good player too.
