True but it comes back to no tip no driver. I never take walmart orders because the pay vs distance is terrible. I am guessing your groceries is one of those scheduled delivery opportunities I ignore.
Why not just do it through uber and get the 40% off grocery promos that they seem to send out weekly.

There's pictures this week on social media of a UPS store with a tip box.

Is it true that restaurants are now using robot servers? What’s the proper tip for a robot?

Depends on the level of service. Could be alkaline batteries, lithium, rechargeable etc.

Just a few spritzes of WD-40 would be much appreciated by our automated friends.

If you had two people in the vehicle and multiple phones with multiple delivery apps going you could probably make pretty good bank. Get your 14 year old kid in the passenger seat to navigate, organize, handle timing, and accept orders on the apps, and you do the driving. Could probably do it 2 hours a night 3 times a week and make pretty good cash.
I'm thinking 6 phones, 2 accounts on each platform (Skip, DoorDash, Uber), and a highly organized person doing the navigating and handling timing and I'm guessing you could make close to $75-80 an hour.

Why is it that we're pretty much the only continent where this is a thing? You go to Asia, Europe...no tipping. I've been to Japan twice this year, and the no tipping thing is a revelation.
Service and food quality have gone way down overall, but we're supposed to pay more for that? Get ####ed.
I used to love going out, but now I'd rather just buy a high quality cut of meat and make my own Old Fashioneds.
Also, get off my lawn.

If you tip me 18% I’ll get off your lawn.

100% agree; super frustrating that this is primarily a North American thing. In fact in Japan, it’s actually considered very insulting to tip.

Careful, someone might offer to remove you from their lawn for 15%. Capitalism can be a cruel mistress.

On the rare occasion I go out to a restaurant, there is a local Japanese restaurant I will walk the extra 10 minutes for because they have their machine tapped out at 10% for a tip. The options are 5%, 10%, or no tip.

Tokyo Street Market on MacLeod had a sign that for untipped staff, a 3.5% fair wage charge would be added to the bill! This is on top of the POS having 10, 15, 18% tip options presented.
This is a hybrid self serve joint, half the stuff is grab from the fridge and go!

How about management pay fair wages instead?

I’m in NZ at the moment and there is no tipping here. It is amazing and wonderful. It’s like looking at rainbows every time I see an interac machine and there is no prompt for a dumb tip

Actually, I’ll be willing to tip as much as 22% if the removal is entertaining. Don’t injure, just be creative…

Yeah, that's dumb.
There is some truth to the fact that restaurant profit margins are terribly small, if the establishment is profitable at all these days. Recent data suggests that 51% of restaurants lose money. Paying the employees more would kill much of the industry. It's already getting too expensive for average people.
Having said that, maybe the industry should die. Obviously the current restaurant model doesn't work well in 2023.

On one hand I feel for the industry, coming out of Covid and now faced with extreme inflation, it has to be difficult for anyone trying to keep their business going.
On the other hand, it feels disingenuous and down-right scummy to automatically tack on that 3.5% charge on the bill... Maybe they're worried about turning customers off if they raised their menu prices 3.5% (seems unlikely), but this way sort of feels like a "gotcha" when you've already ordered and finished your meal... And then they prompt for a tip as well!
I'd much rather they jack the menu prices and have a note on the menus or tables: "We have increased our menu prices by __%. This amount goes directly to our untipped staff. We appreciate your understanding during this difficult time." or some such BS.
