I am trying to pawn off my old winter tires and rims to either my sister or my parents, who both have cars with a 4x100 bolt pattern and 14 inch wheels, which is perfect. The tire size, however, is 185/60r14 vs. 195/65r14. According to this tire size calculator ( http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html), the difference in radius would be about 0.2 inches, and the speedometre would be 2.1% off.
Does anyone know if this is a reasonable difference? Any reason why this wouldn't work? What is typically a reasonable difference: 1%, 2%, 5%, etc?

3% is pretty reasonable.

Well speeding is against the law, and since I am doing the speed limit without winter tires which is worse? Pretty sure speeding with winter tires is more dangerous that not using winter tires. Feel free to PM me if you feel the need to keep this discussion going so we don't derail the thread.

When conditions get to a certain point, it is not safe to go the speed limit on all seasons, or on winters.
Physics says that you hit that point with all seasons first though. There are conditions where it's safe to do the speed limit on winters, but not on all seasons.

I was hoping the thread wouldn't be bumped for a winter vs all-season battle again. Fighting about winters tires being required is like trying to convince thruthers 9/11 wasn't a conspiracy.

That's because the Government and Big Business want you to think that All Seasons are suitable. I feel sorry for you sheeple.

Putting on my snow tires tommorow. I still cant believe the number of people in cgy that still dont think they need them. They should be mandatory imo cause you are putting others lives at risk with your cheap all seasons.

Well.... I had Firestone Destination LE's on them before for comparison. The Fortera TripleTreds are:
Pros
- Wet traction has improved a ton, the Firestones were brutal for hydroplaning when they hit standing water.
- dry handing improved noticably, though that might be the alignment. Tired don't squeal nearly as much under "spirited" driving though.
Cons
- Fuel economy has dropped 2.5%, consistent with Tire Rack comments.
- Noise level is about the same as the Firestones, which isn't what I would call silent.
I'll comment on snow performance once I get more time on them. From today's experience.... it's definitely not as good as a dedicated winter tire. The question I'll answer later is.... by how much.

I'll let you know how winters compare to all-seasons when I drive some backroads in K-Country tomorrow.

I just put some goodyear duratracs on my ram 1500. I work out on the rigs, and it seems like most guys out here run AT or MT all year round... not sure if that is smart, so I went with some tires that at least have a snowflake on the side. I will get some mudders on in the springtime.
My city car will be getting it's winters on when I am back in town. I have hakka RSIs from kal tire. They are amazing in the snow and ice, but brutal on dry pavement (and even on wet roads)- so much so that I'd be hesitant to get them again. My dad has had michelin x-ice and now has some coopers discoverers on his trailblazer that he thinks are good.

Are the X-Ice 2 the tires to get this year? I have the X Ice 1 and I think they are OK, not the best on snow/ice but good on dry road.

I haven't driven the RSIs but I'm used to run the Hakka R on my Mazda 3 when I had it. They were decent enough on wet pavement, good on dry pavement and definitely amazing on snow and ice.

I had Hakkapeliitta R's on my Civic, they felt very soft, kinda balloon like on dry pavement. I got a set of used Goodyear Nordics, for a very good price from a CP member, and they seem to be just as good if not better then the Hakka's I had.
