Oh well. Big return and a hail mary?
I'm taking a lot of positives away from this against the alleged best team in the division.
Damn. Well... the Raiders look better. Lots of good things. Great defense, good discipline and the run game looks good.
If I were wearing that ghey powder blue in the stands, I would be running for my life. Raiders fans are going to be choked and out for blood!

I know Cable will get a ton of judo's for going for it on 4th down since it (very luckily) was successful, but what a terrible call.
Your team has shown it can't throw anything other than screens and two yard dumps and the defense has been great and you go for it on 4 and 15?
If the SD safety plays the throw right it is an easy pick for him.
Of course these calls are always based on what happened and not what actually was the smart play but that was a bad call.
Good to see the Chargers win they deserved it and they run their organization properly.

Agreed, both coaches suck, bad decisions everywhere.

Laugh. So you kick a long field goal and have to onside kick to get the ball back and then you're in a similar situation and field position?
It was a huge risk but with that QB, you're not going to get many chances and the odds of a long FG and an onside kick and another score were probably less than making 15 yards.
But you like to nitpick and be critical... so I'm not surprised you piped up.

Actually it would have been a punt and with time outs, the two minute warning and time on the clock it may not have been the worst move. You never know though, NFL offences suddenly seem to be able to move the ball when there is an urgency that isn't there earlier in the game. The problem with that play for the Raiders was that they gave the Chargers too much time to counter punch back. The rookie should have ran along the goal line for a minute.
As Sean Connery says losers make excuses and winners go home and have their way with the prom queen. This week teams like the Bengals, Bills, and Raiders got to watch the other team take the prom queen off their hand after they bought her dinner and drinks and left them there with the bill.

No you punt and hold them to a 3 and out. The Chargers had what 18 points at that point, the Raiders D had been keeping them in the game all night long. Seems like a more likely chance that they step up again then Russel makes his first long play of the game.
No need for an onside kick with the TO's there was plenty of time left to get the ball back and get a good scoring chance.

How is it nitpicking?
Not surprised that you can't take criticism of a Raider's move even if it was made by the most unqualified coach in the league.

The Raiders couldn't even hold the Chargers when they had the lead and would have won the game. What makes you think they would have held the Chargers to get the ball back?

i am a chargers fan but i have to admit, as a supposed elite type team, they might have the worst offensive and defensive line... they never get any kind of pass rush and their o line cant block anybody..... play calling is poor and Turner never seems to have this team ready... they arent going anywhere until they have a real defense not that soft get pushed around all game type of D....

I think that they had a better chance of stopping them (which they had been doing all game) then getting a 15 yard play (which they hadn't been doing all game).
I don't think they would have won either way because SD is by far the better team, but think that going with your strength (Defense) is better than going with your huge weakness (passing).

gotta agree with moon, the 2nd one was definitely a penalty. Thomas should know better. I heard the whistle blow before he drove Edwards into the ground and knew he was going to get called on it.

Chargers were burned by a horrible call in the opening game last year. This year they benefit from a horrible call in the opening game.

I don't really know why the Chargers were getting all the preseason hype in the first place. They were a losing team most of last season untill the end of the season. A dropped onside kick by Dewayne Bowe gives the Bolts a chance in KC and they avoid being eliminated from the playoffs. The following week they blow the Broncos out of the water to take the division and now the media thinks they are a Super Bowl contender? Marty Schottenhiemer made the Chargers who they are. He is long gone. LT is also over the hill. As far as I'm concerned, the Chargers are 1 of 4 bad teams in the AFC West.

I think the Chargers with a 4 point lead would have probably stopped themselves by trying to run 3 plays up the middle and gaining 6 yards, forcing them to kick the ball back to the Raiders. In the NFL you almost want to be down by less than 7 points and have the ball with a minute a half to go. It forces you to try and move the ball.

That's true, when did coaches in the NFL become so chicken? Chargers only got a TD at the end cause they had to. Nobody goes for the kill anymore.
