You mentioned using an american iTunes gift card to get an american account, how's that work? Can I still use all the apps I purchased on my canadian account?
ETA: nm, google is my friend. Anyone know if you can get those mastercard gift cards in town?

For those that don't want to google it, I'll answer your questions anyways.
I have found the lag to be about 1 or 2 seconds depending on the wifi strength. To call landlines you'll have to set up either a monthly account or skype credit. I paid $3 for unlimited north america this month just because that will be all i need.
The bare bones explanation on how to get an american itunes account is:
- go to ebay and buy an itunes gift card (just make sure it's for the american store)
- Once you buy the card/win the auction the seller will email you the card #
- Sign up for a new account with itunes and provide an address in california (no state tax) ... I just used google maps and found a pizza place.
- when selecting payment options select gift card and enter the # that the ebay seller emailed to you.
That's pretty much it. My iphone is full of apps that were downloaded with both my canadian and american account. If you have an apple tv this process is a must as the itunes tv show selection is 1000x better in the USA store than the Canadian one.
One thing to remember, when you sync/plug in your iphone to your computer it will automatically associate whatever account you have currently active in itunes with your phone. I was confused the first time i went to look for podcasts and it was all american content and no canadian. If you want your phone to associate with the canadian store again (perhaps you want a quirks and quarks podcast), then just sign into your canadian account and plug your iphone in.
