I am hearing rumors of an alternate NHL schedule for a Coyotes relocated to SLC. The State of Utah has already earmarked tax money for a Basketball/Hockey Arena along with a new Baseball Stadium. So things are moving towards SLC, it seems.

Boring!

Bring on something new, bonus points if it's dumb.

If the NHL returns with a new arena, I want a brand new team/identity in Phoenix. The Coyotes stink can go to and stay in Utah

Sounds like Alex Meruelo would want the retain the rights to the Coyotes name/branding as a condition of sale (in hopes of a future expansion team). Whether that's realistic is another thing.

Ryan Smith seems to be pushing for a unique Utah branding for a relocated team, and while there are indeed Canis latrans native to the state the Coyotes name won't be used.

As tiresome as this has been, just stop and imagine being a die hard fan that stuck with this team for years through all of this. And now they leave.

Gut punch. I feel awful for fans.

Like Jordan. I feel bad for you and other fans. Sad day in Arizona regardless of our feelings one way or the other. Fans lose.

May as well change the name of the basketball team at the same time. Jazz is a stupid name.

I have been a fan since 2000 and the team is a huge reason I moved here in 2009.. I've invested a ton of personal time, money, energy defending this team.. But to see the team uproot like this when they are SO close to a solution is 100% mindblowingly unexpected. I have no words..

I am absolutely uninvested to a large degree, haven't been to a game since 2019 outside of 1 game at Mullett to see The Flames last season so I'm not even close to a die hard fan today.. But I TRULY believe the NHL can work in Arizona.. but it's just such a shame that the team has been run by absolute pretenders since day 1.

lol no kidding. I’m not much of a basketball fan but I always wondered why the Utah Jazz? Was there a saxophonist from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir they were trying to honor? Then finally some guy at an airport told me they started in New Orleans and I felt very dumb.

If the whole reason why they are having a land auction is because Mureulo started the process, are there any legal or financial repercussions if he pulls out and doesn't bid?

It would be funny if all this was just a scheme to get the land up for auction so that some random 3rd party is able to get it at the starting bid.

You have to remember it's about corporate money too:

In regards of the first bolded, the problem is that they're not. They don't even have the land that their proposing now. They're very far from a solution that they can actually carry through with.

The second bolded I agree with. The situation in Arizona since mid 2000's has been a non-stop ####show, and the NHL really wanted to make it work there consider it tried to make it work for almost 20 years since the mess started. The owners never gave it a chance to have a solid foundation to be stable on. If a prospective owner in the future can secure an adequate arena in an area that's viable for fan retention, and ensure stability for the franchise for a good duration of time, then it's second go around should be a much story than this one has been.
