What if one of the AHL assistants is promoted over Love?

Nah, I doubt they're that high on Nachbauer or Cirella. But Cail Maclean was a Huska assistant in the AHL. I'd look and see who Huska had as staff in Kelowna.

I expect Love to take an assistant job with the Leafs, with the expectation of being next in line once Treliving moves on from Keefe

Dan Lambert was Huska's AC during his time in Kelowna. Lambert was recently let go after spending 4 seasons as an AC in Nashville.

I could see him being a potential option as an AC here.

Friedman said on 32 Thoughts that a lot of up and coming coaches love that Huska is getting a chance

I see he has HC experience in the W, and won a championship there. And IMO Nashville under Hynes held together quite well despite selling off players.

It was always going to be a win/lose scenario between love and huska. Meaning one wasn't going to stick around if the opportunity went to another.

And I think that would be fair. Whatever people seem to think about Loves experience not being proven or propped up by Wolf, fact is he is still in rarified air as a consecutive COY award winner.

He absolutely should get looks from other organizations and I likely on the top of a lot of lists.

Either way, this is Huskas team now and I'm keen on seeing how next season unfolds.

I want them to develop from within, so I’m 100% on board with this.

I like Huska and it's great to see him get a shot. I also think it's pretty good asset management by the team. Whereas a candidate with Huska's resume and experience, if passed over, would have been snapped up immediately (probably by Treliving), there is a pretty strong chance you can keep Love in the organization for a year or two.

I'm just not sure the market for Love's services is as robust as everyone thought. He's had two great years, no doubt. But only two, and backed by elite goaltending. There were no reports of him being invited to interview elsewhere, nor of the Flames being asked permission.

There also aren't many NHL assistant spots open right now, and in most cases teams will have internal or known candidates earmarked for those roles. So there's probably pretty decent odds that Love sticks around and is added to the Flames staff in a week or two.

It's possible the team makes this Huska's day, and waits to announce his staff on a later day.

Ok, I'm gonna ask:

Can someone tell me the difference between an associate coach and an assistant coach?

The Calgary Flames announced today that Ryan Huska has been named head coach. Huska becomes the 24th head coach in the history of the franchise*.

"Following a detailed search process, today we are proud to introduce Ryan Huska as Head Coach of the Calgary Flames," stated General Manager Craig Conroy. "While continuity and familiarity are a benefit, we have witnessed first-hand Ryan's work ethic; he is a clear communicator who builds trust with his players; and he's a critical thinker with a plan.

"Ryan provides 11 seasons of bench experience as a head coach from the WHL and the AHL and over 20 years coaching in total, including knowledge gained as an assistant coach in Calgary for the past five seasons. Ryan has earned this opportunity and we are confident he is the right coach for our team."

Huska has coached in the Flames organization since the 2014-15 season in which he was appointed head coach of the Flames' American Hockey League affiliate in Adirondack. He would go on to coach the Flames top prospects in Stockton before becoming an assistant coach with the Flames in 2018. In four years as an AHL bench boss, Huska posted a 135-118-27 record while fostering the development of several future NHL players including current Flames Rasmus Andersson, Andrew Mangiapane, and Oliver Kylington.
No mention of assistants or associates.

I think its a major fail letting Love walk and not having him be apart of anything NHL related, the amount of respect Love had in the AHL room is absurd, the guy knew how to get our farm team fired up and in the game.

How this was not factored in scares me.
