We had a bit of a falling out. We don't speak to each other anymore.
I called him a 'watered down fascist' and he took it really personally.

Yeah, general church. If we want to get right down to it the main religions are all the same or had the same general start so it can apply to Abrahamic religions. They seem to be the ones that get distorted the most.
How many Buddhist priest have luxury vacation homes?

I don't know the answer to that.
I do however work next to a Buddhist temple and those guys are pretty chill. Considering how old they all are despite the fact that I never see them without a cigarette makes me occasionally doubt the danger of cigarettes.
The one guy is like 93 and he's never without a dart. I can't explain it.
I saw him go on the roof a few weeks back and he lit a dart before climbing the ladder...in his robe and sandals no less!
Ladder. Robe. Sandals. Dart.
How many risks would you like to take all at once? Buddha is a pretty chill dude.

It's actually funny, someone did a take down of the whole Blue Zones narrative, and they said the best correlation with being labelled a blue zone is bad record keeping about 80 years ago, for some very recordable reason, political problems, poverty, church fire... or incentives like post war tax credits for everyone over 18, suddenly a bunch of 5 years olds are registered at 25 years old. Basically speculating there isn't anything special about the places, but that they are wrong about the ages, then often as you approach 100 you don't have the cognitive capacity to correct the erroneous data. (Blue Zone = likely to have a higher percentage of 100+ year olds than normal).
Long story short, are you sure they aren't 75 year old chain smokers that look 95 because of lifestyle choices? Don't believe anything those Monks say.

I can barely understand anything those Monks say anyways.
Honestly, I only talk to them when I accidentally get their mail or when I pass them in general. They were doing some nonsense to their roof and theres a cable between their roof and my office and I asked them to be careful.
And the dude in a robe and sandals put his cigarette out on the cable.

Pastor Charged After Hitting Wife on Flight, Told Police He Was Upset That She Was Upgraded to 1st Class Without Him
Quote:
A pastor faces a federal assault charge after allegedly hitting his wife during an Alaska Airlines flight because she was upgraded to first class without him, authorities said.
The alleged incident occurred on Alaska Airlines flight 275 from Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska, on July 2, according to a criminal complaint reviewed by PEOPLE. Roger Allan Holmberg Sr. and his wife, whose name was not provided, had been traveling from Virginia for an event related to their ministry, the complaint states.
Holmberg formerly worked as pastor at the Grace Baptist Temple in Anchorage, KKTV and Alaska News Source reported.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Alaska Airlines said, “We can confirm that Mr. Holmberg has been banned from our flights and a simple assault charge was filed against him by the U.S. Gov’t. (FBI) on July 3rd.”
According to the complaint, Holmberg allegedly told his wife of 18 months, “How the hell did you get the upgrade?” The woman responded, “I'm a gold point member. Don't speak to me like that.”
Holmberg then handed his phone to his wife from the aisle, telling her to read it before giving her the middle finger, the complaint states. After that, a witness claimed they saw Holmberg “swing his arm” towards the woman. “[The witness] leaned forward to block the attempted strike, but [Holmberg] still appeared to strike the top of the victim’s head with his hand,” the complaint reads.
According to the complaint, another witness said they heard two passengers in the first class cabin being disruptive, with a woman saying, “You cannot be doing that.” Holmberg then headed to the first-class bathroom and when he got out, the witness told him, “if there were any further incidents, we would put him in handcuffs," the complaint states.

I’d be happy if my wife was upgraded to first class, preferably with me but also if she went alone.

Any "minister" or "pastor" is a deranged, delusional person to start with, only liars and born scam artists are drawn to this profession. The apologists but be glad it was a simple physical assault, no kids raped this time, check his history though.

I used to be a youth pastor (well maybe youth leader? I never had any official education or whatever) and I wouldn't call myself deranged. Delusional may have fit.. I honestly believed what I taught them about the Bible and tried my best to help them and support them because I cared about them.
I definitely wasn't a liar or a scam artist.
It was the fact that while I felt God would tell me what I should talk about or that God would tell the other pastors and leaders about what they should be doing but God seemingly completely neglected to tell the leadership about the abuse that happened in the church that made me start to question things. Well one of the many many things that raised questions..
If God is talking to the leaders but none of the leaders are aware that some person is abusing people (physically, mentally, sexually, whatever) then either God isn't telling, the leaders aren't listening.

Delusional for sure, that's quite evident. Deranged, alright, I'll budge on that, but it's a large majority that are out of their minds.

No you certainly were not. You were devoting your time and talents to convey a positive message to the kids...something that some on this board would do well to think about.
Some of the greatest and most giving people I have known were deeply religious. You can devote your time to downgrade religion, but there are some very useful and positive things to be gained from it.

There are plenty of ministers that are completely normal, decent people, and plenty of churches that are little more than community hubs for people who grew up going to church and still enjoy it. I’m not religious myself and have had plenty of negative encounter with people who are, but even I have to say these vast generalizations are absurd.
I think it’s fair game to criticize religion and the larger institutions in general, as well as certain manifestations of either, but when you get down to the individual and start saying “anyone who is ___ is ___” then you’re not much better ideologically than the worst of them.
EDIT: I should add, I see both posts above mine as examples of this. Two sides of the same coin.

Their is also a huge amount of harm caused by it, and I don't think making kids believe in things that don't exist through existential threats and is all that positive a thing for developing minds, but hey, they do good stuff too, so that makes the lying part OK. No way they'd end up as adults forcing their own nonsense on the rest of society. Nope, never really a problem.

Well at the time I thought the message was positive and helpful.
Now I understand it's a much more mixed bag and that while some of it was uplifting and helpful much of it was detrimental. That of course varies wildly depending on the details of the denomination or doctrine or group, but I'd find it difficult to argue that overall it wasn't a net negative.
Just wanted to point out that good people can do things they believe are good and for good reasons and things still can turn out for the worse without having people be liars and scam artists (of which there are many to be fair). It's a feature of social structures.
