Sometimes you take chances and they work out financially (Joker) and sometimes well they don't.
I don't think there is a chance Suicide Squad 2 does well.

The first one was almost as bad as Batman vs Superman, especially in the the 3rd act, and people wanted it to be good so badly it took almost two weeks for the general audiences to admit just how terrible it was. Allot of people were fooled in to watch that train wreck, and they aren't going back.

I hope people give The new Suicide Squad a chance. A lot of people liked Guardians of the Galaxy so having James Gunn on board will sell it to the MCU audience. Plus it has a totally new cast except for Margot Robbie, Viola Davis , Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnamin. Then add in John Cena, Taika Wattiti (in his return to DC comics films since his appearance in Green Lantern lol) and Idris Elba.

I imagine the first trailer for SS will go "You think you know the Suicide Squad? You ain't seen nothing yet. Introducing the new and improved Squad" just to help combat people's negative reaction to the first one.

The interesting thing about SS is that it made bank at the box office and made $100,000,000 on home video which is super hard to do these days.

aha, the mystery of the disappointing box office result has been solved:

Warner Bros. learned this past weekend that Birds of Prey, otherwise known as Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), isn’t exactly search engine optimization (SEO) friendly. The sequel of sorts to Suicide Squad barely made a dent in the box office due to many marketing issues involving the film, and, as a result, Warner Bros. has changed the name of the movie to Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey.

The title change appeared last night on ticket sites for major theaters. A Warner Bros. representative told The Verge that the name change is part of a “search expansion for ticket sites,” making it easier for people to find the movie. Adding Harley Quinn’s name to the beginning of the title also gives moviegoers a better understanding of what Birds of Prey is about, an issue the movie has faced in recent weeks.

The movie is doing so poorly they changed the title

Birds of Prey gets new title after disappointing opening at box office

Birds of Prey has earned $46 million internationally for a worldwide total of $79 million so far, against a reported $82 million budget. It’s estimated that the film will need to gross $250-300 million worldwide to break even.
Also theatre contracts are structured so the bulk of profits go to the studio during the first week after that the theatres take more of the cut. That's why we keep hearing about how important the opening take is.

hmm I always thought the rule of thumb was double the production budget for break-even point. unless this means that they poured a disproportionate amount into marketing, and most definitely did not get value for the money in that department.

I wonder how much of a lack of an End Game (pun intended) for DC is playing a part in this. The DCEU is playing more like the Fox X-Men universe where each film doesn't really build on the last and the box office results differ with each film. With the MCU they hype each movie like you need to see it to keep up with what's going on, there are very few one off films. If DC was building to say a Darkseid or a Legion of Doom I wonder if this does better.

Oh no! Who could have seen this coming?

Everyone. Everyone saw this coming.

Suicide Squad 2 has hope because its being marketed as 'nothing like the last one....which sucked out loud' and because James Gunn, someone with a recent track history of successful movies might pull it out of the quagmire and actually make something decent.

That's the thing with these smaller budget movies that are risky is they could go either way. Yes this one didn't light the box office world on fire but it's not like a Green Lantern/Dark Phoenix situation where it will lose the studio over $100 million. At worst this will lose the studio like $10 million or could even break even when home video/streaming sales are counted.

This film was a risk much like Joker, and Joker ended up being the most profitable film of last year.

Joker has way more name recognition than BOP. Nobody outside hardcore comic nerds know what BOP is. They may have tangentially heard of Harley, or remember her from that terrible other movie she was in. And Joker had good legs after positive reviews that expanded the audience beyond typical comic book movie lovers.

You have to stop. These comparisons dont work.

Joker was a risk, but from a financial perspective it was a very calculated, limited risk and what made it successful was a strong story, strong character and effective execution.

It wasnt just some crazy 'shoot-'em-up' it was a thoughtful, poignant character study.

This is not that.

I was comparing the risk that WB took for both films. Joker cost $55 million to make and BOP was around $80 million. These budgets are both on the smaller scale for comic book movies in 2019/2020. No one could have seen Joker blowing up like it did, most people were cautious about it before it came out and much more reserved with their box office predictions. An R rated character study with no China release by the director of Hangover doesn't really scream billion dollar film. BOP is an R rated all female team up superhero film(the first) and directed by a 2nd time female director. WB is really trying to be more director driven with their DC films and it's starting to show. Joker is very much Todd Phillips vision and BOP is very much (for better of worse) what Margot Robbie/Cathy Yan wanted to put on screen. My hope is they don't take the wrong lessons from this and start to be more hands on again because that's how we end up with films like Suicide Squad or Justice League.

I’m confused about bird of prey is it R rated or not? Cineplex is showing 14a but everywhere says R do I gamble buying tickets and taking my nephew who wants to see it?

It's rated R in the States.

It's 14A in Alberta (and the rest of Canada, except Quebec, where it's 13+).

It’s crazy what 14 year olds get to see in movies nowadays. Back when I was 14 stuff like this and Bad Boys were hard 18A’s.

Sonic is a lock to do better than BoP did for the opening weekend. The real question is if it can top Pikachu's opening last year ($54M).
