A lot of fans on here seem to fear the win-now mode.
Probably from emotional scarring in the past (warranted), but just remember that this window is barely opening and is set to be open for a decently long term. You gotta face your fears as a fan at some point

It's amazing that before draft day 2015, most people would have said the biggest void in the Flames organization was defence. Since then, Treliving has added
Hamilton
Andersson
Kylington
Fox
Valimaki
Hamonic
Unreal.

Despite what people say about the Flames offense, it has been in the upper half of the league over the past three seasons.
Think about it this way... maybe they won't have to score 4-5 goals a game minimum to win and get 2 PPG out of Johnny when they arent allowing goals left right and center like the have been. Defense was a bigger need than people were maybe seeing. The problem last season if anything was the flames weren't able to win those low scoring tight games. Maybe now with a proven starter and rock solid top 4, that can start to be the case.

Even with Hamonic in the fold, #Flames' Treliving says he'd like to keep talking with pending UFA Michael Stone to find a way to keep him.
|
EXCELLENT. That top-5 would rival anybody in the league's.
Call me crazy, but I think that Kylington would be an awesome partner for Stone. Is there any chance we see something like this next year?
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Hamonic
Kylington - Stone
?

It's taken us years but we've finally replaced Regehr after Feaster gave him away and kept Sarich. Hamonic is like a better skating Regehr from what I've seen of him. Super pumped about this. We've been lacking a strong, physical shutdown dman. Holy cow is our defense scary now.
We're a contender now and for years to come boys!!
Thanks be to Treliving! This guy just gets better and better as a GM

You're damn right it's win now, and why wouldn't it be?
Zero concern about the players that would be taken long term. More concerned about it limiting options in acquiring players via trade, as the assets are dwindling.
Very happy with this.

Count me in on the happy group. At some point I am sure we can recoup a few picks, but we have a decent prospect base and our team is still fairly young. At some point we have to worry about the present, and that time is now!! I think we will still be ok down the road too, as we will have assets to get picks IMO.
What do you guys think about allowing one of our young goalies to try for back-up, considering the D we have in front of them now? Rittich or Gillies emerging as a solid back up would be fantastic.

agreed...
"Win now" presumes that our core is aging and is going to be blown up in the next 1-2 years...
so, who exactly is Calgary trying to "beat the clock" for? We have Gio, who is a guy that is about to start sliding a bit... and Smith is in the same boat.
Outside of those two guys, this group can stay together for another 5 years easy...This move sets up the D for another 6-8 years imo
Not sure how that squares with the idea we are in a "Win now" mode?

Solid move, I mean I look at Harmonic and he's young and has a great contract, and while we have him on the second pair, if injuries hit he can move up in a pinch.
I don't know how people think that the cupboard is emptying, The Flames have done a good job of stockpiling defensive prospects and we have some other very good prospects coming up as well. At some point the justification can't continue to be playing the odds with the mystery box unless we're in perpetual rebuild.
I love this trade, now the Flames can option to sign Stone or look at what's in the system for the bottom pairing blueline.
What makes me really laugh is that Edmonton sends a top 6 forward with a 50 point history to Edmonton and gets back a flop. While the Islanders send us a major piece that really represents what the Oilers wanted for Eberle, its almost like a universal Eastern Conference FU to Chia and the Oilers.

Until Gio actually starts to slide, let's not worry about it. Brodie and Dougie are both great, but Gio makes both pairings all-world.

Also, Kylington and Andersson are the guys you hope you'd get with those two 2nd's. And they're going to be ready in the next 12-24 months. Instead of in another Olympic cycle.

Nashville is living proof why you build out from your blue line.
I am glad the flames appear to be taking that approach.

Nah I think Kylington is still quite a ways away from being able to defend at the NHL level. Kulak much more likely to be on that 3rd pair imo. Or even Andersson although that may give us too many righties
