They might have, but mostly blew it in the end.

The NDP felt they had to make that little show to bring attention to Trudeau's "how can I be worse than Harper" motion. It was silly grandstanding, and Justin's arrogance in getting involved directly immensely helped their cause.

But then they went and blew it with the utterly over the top hyperbole following that. So much so that Trudeau's popularity increased to their own detriment.

Playing the victim card has been such a fool-proof way to gain the moral and political high ground recently, that I bet the NDP are genuinely surprised it didn't work in this case.
