What makes it even cooler is that you can plug this movie directly into the "watch in this order" for a Star Wars marathon now. It is a complete one off, but one that explores a very cool part of the existing story. Now we just need one about all those poor Bothans!!
I am also looking forward to picking out the real vs CGI moments. In homage to the OT they tried to do as much with real props/costumes as possible versus CGI.

Tried to get my wife to watch the original trilogy (grew up in Vietnam, never watched any Star Wars), but she got bored 30 minutes into ANH because it was too dated. She loves watching big blockbuster action movies in theaters though, so I'm hoping this will be a good launch to get her actually interested in Star Wars

I stumbled upon some footage I probably shouldn't have seen yet.. but holy crap, prepare yourselves.
Hype meter is at 15/10 right now.

sweet!!! i've been staying clear of everything except the commercials on tv (every time one comes on during a hockey game my 3 year old exclaims, "LOOK DADDY LOOK!!! STAAARRRRR WAAARRRRRS!! when i get bigger can i go watch star wars with you?" ha! ha!) so i'm really pumped to see this one.
myself and 2 buddies are going friday night - can't wait! i think i'm looking forward to this star wars film the most as it's "my era" of star wars. a new hope was the very first movie i ever remember seeing in theaters (still can't believe my parents took me to see it at the age of 4!) and i wore out the first copy of it we had on vhs!

Yeah, it's nice that the series is now up to five movies, it'll actually be a legit marathon now.

Textbook stuff.
And sure, people can bitch and moan that it wasnt 'original' but the fact of the matter remains that the vast majority of people dont and didnt care!
People wanted Star Wars! And they got Star Wars!
And they used that lack of creativity and burned a bunch of goodwill from fairweather fans, to get the new story rolling.
This was your drug-dealer's "The first one is free."
Oh, and did I mention that they made a crap-ton of money doing it?
And a crap-ton is: "The third highest grossing film of all time."
So...lots of people seem to have enjoyed it. Despite the fact that they were played. Manipulated hard. Myself included.
But its the same as going to see a Magic Show, sometimes you want to and allow yourself to be manipulated.

Sure that is text book stuff for crap movies. "lets make a remake of a movie" it works a lot.
I wouldn't say fairweather fans were the ones that were PO'ed at the lack of originality. Although, I would agree that fanboys loved it more, but this generation of Apple fanboys doesn't add weight to the argument that the movie was good.
I would argue TFA was a reach out to the new star wars fans. They can offer the same film as ANH then package it into the modern realm.
Making money doesn't mean it was a good movie. Especially a franchise like this.
TFA isn't horrible. It's good. It's safe. It's in no way a classic.
Rogue One sounds like it has an original story and so far people are loving it because of that reason.

I heard there has been a ton of audience reaction to the movie in the theatres, with rousing ovations at the end credits.
As one person put out there "it's movies like this why we need an audience cam installed in theatres"
Sounds like there will be more surprises than people are expecting, given that it's a movie where we already know exactly where the overall story goes going in. Also sounds like it's very much aimed at pleasing long time fans of the franchise.

So today is the first viewing in our areas, do we need to make a new thread, change the title of this thread or just assume that the movie is now open game?

Please create a new thread like we did for force awakens. I thought that worked pretty well as people saw it over the Christmas break.

Just a suggestion, on the other thread maybe but 'Spoilers' at the front of the title too? If you're clicking in from The Off Topic both threads just show as "Star Wars Rogue One..." so if you clicked right on it you might end up with a bunch of spoilers inadvertently.

From what I've read people are saying not to take younger children as it's a lot darker, and is a straight up war movie in parts.. it is rated PG-13. I read one short review by a 10 year old saying there are some really scary parts and he wouldn't let kids under 7 go. I've also heard a few parents say that if a kid has any kind of admiration of Vader or couldn't handle seeing Vader as truly evil then don't take them.

This one has more details but I didn't read it all as it looked like it was going to get a bit spoilery, but if I was taking a young kid I'd probably let myself be spoiled a bit.

The other Star Wars movie that was PG-13 was 3 which I probably shouldn't have let my 5 year old watch. Thanks for the heads up.
