Having lived in Edmonton for 8 years, it's sad to see the NHL manipulate Calgarians in the same way they did a few years ago to Edmontonians.

It was the exact same thing with Bettman before the Oil started on the new arena. Comes in to town, doesn't even veil his threats that the team will leave if a new arena isn't built. Insults the mayor and city council. Blah blah blah. Now Calgary it's your turn.

I am not a Nenshi fan but he is elected to serve Calgarians which gives him a little more legitimacy than Bettman and Francis to speak to the issue.

No one is saying there should be free tax $ for a new building but to dismiss CalgaryNEXT outright is irresponsible. YYC deserves better.

I can't stand Eric Francis, but Mayor Nenshi ‏ looks horrible in his exchanges today. He should be looking like the leader of a world class city, but he's coming off as the mayor of a hick town in the middle of no where. Very disappointed in his behavior on this subject.

You've got a large group of Calgarians laid off, many more worried about it and the economic future of Alberta. In general, the Flames and NHL have been pretty much tone deaf to that.

The criticism on Nenshi is fairly correct in many circumstances but in this case, I think he probably could have been more harsh.
