The thing with Hiller is you know exactly what you're going to get. He's a reliable, but average starting goalie. He is never going to be in the top echelon of goalies. He's going to give up bad goals, but he also still might steal a game or two.
Ramo and Ortio are still largely wild cards. I think Ramo has potential to be really good, but he could still end up being exactly what he has been. A wildly inconsistent, occasionally injured goalie.
If the Flames fancy themselves a good team that could do some good things, the goaltending will need to be sorted out.

Kerr today on 960 says that he believes the Flames they thought they had a landing spot for Hiller and that's why they signed Ramo. He further speculated that spot was San Jose but that the Jones deal scuttled that.

There's a spot for Hiller somewhere, especially if you eat 25-50% of his salary. I doubt Boston is sold on Subban as a full time backup. Kinkaid had a below average year in Jersey last year. Hutton was average in Nashville, Montoya was bad in Florida. Vasilevskiy is injured for Tampa. There are spots out there where Hiller looks real good as a 2 million dollar backup. Return won't be spectacular but he's definitely tradable.

Panthers is a good call, Tallon went after Talbot hard in the off season which means Montoya is all but done in Florida. He was pretty terrible last year.

Just to shift here, I wonder if Brodie's injury opens the door for Kulak? Similar style of player, and he's been good so far.

Maybe, but I don't see their ownership wanting to pay $2.25 million for a back-up. (and that's at 50% off)
Quite honestly i don't see any team wanting to pay $2.25 million unless their #1 goalie gets injured and is out long term. I think the same would apply to Ramo. Ramo at 50 % off is still $1.9 million. Maybe something can be done after the new year, when the flames have payed out some of the contract , but i'll be shocked if they could do it before. Maybe if they retain salary and take a contract back it could be done after the pre-season.

So if Ortio wins a spot we send Hiller or Ramo to Stockton. No big deal and we have a ready replacement in case of injury or as the season goes on, Ortio can't handle the pressure.

Was Jones not dealt before we re-signed Ramo?

Yes. He was traded to San Jose on June 30. Ramo signed on July 1.

The Sharks could still use a goalie. Stalock is not very good. The difference between him and Hiller is huge.

I dont know if Kerr actually implied that San Jose was where Hiller might have ended up. I took his comment more along the lines of it changed the market price for a goaltender and the deal was never able to recover from there

The deal with Ramo was probably negotiated and agreed to before the June 30th information was released.

I think Jonas hiller can still be a great keeper. He just needs to work on the simple positioning skills that got him in the NHL in the first place. Hugging his post, being square etc. He was one of my favorite goalies when he was at Anaheim. I still remember his solid game against team canada for Switzerland. I think ramo should be our starter though but that's based on the end of last season. I really wouldn't want us to just trade hiller and give an NHL job to ortio I'd like him to earn it a bit more. He was fantastic in his stint with the big club last year but I'd like to see him share the crease with gillies and show how much better he is. Plus hiller could easily rebound and have a year similar to those strong seasons he had in Anaheim pre-vertigo

He was pretty good against the Ducks, the team was just awfully outmatched and the floodgates opened.
Vs Winnipeg was also his first game back from injury, behind an AHL defense.

Hiller will be gone the moment a goalie gets injured, which will happen. He's one of the few, or the only one, on the market that will be able to jump in and play as a starter immediately and maintain ~.900
