This is actually an interesting point, a bunch of players this year have returned from injuries and played much worse than they had before - Stempniak, Wideman, Russell and then Cammy up until recently. Almost makes you wonder if these guys should be held back a bit when returning.

I think Cammalleri is having fun. He could sign in Calgary for more money than he will get anywhere else, and he knows that if we are out of the playoffs come the deadline that he will be traded to a contending team. It's a win win for him to sign here.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him try free agency. But if he doesn't get the deal he wants I could see him sign in Calgary.

Good observation.
We could add Monahan to this as well earlier in the season.
Burke and Hartley are no cuddle bears so it can be systematic.
With Cammy it was very obvious, it was like his brain just wasn't working.

It is no different on other teams - when guys have been out for lengthy stretches, it takes a while to get rolling again.
This is not a Flames organizational problem.

true, but is there evidence to suggest that the Flames are doing this? I don't think so.

No evidence, unless you infer from the observations, which are inconclusive.
We do have Hartley's record, but he looks like he has evolved.
Players always want to return faster than they should.
Somebody stop them.

I find it pretty interesting that of the big name FAs traded on or around the deadline, Cammalleri has outperformed them all since then.
Burke proving his point I guess.

I really hope that teams that had cap room but were too cheap to give up a second (that means you Anaheim and Columbus) or went a different direction (NJ, LA, Ott) either miss the playoffs or get bounced in the first round. Cheap basterds, explain the missed playoff revenue to your owners.

What has Burke offered him you think? 3 years, 18-20 million?

He will get that in free agency however I bet it was more along 3 years 16.5
I feel like he would take the 18-20 million and run if it was offered!

I sure hope Burke hasn't offered him 3yrs @ 6.5m. That'd be an awful contract.
My preference is still that we let him go this summer. If he does sign, I'm hoping 2yrs @ 4m.

He has been playing pretty awesome as of late but I just can't shake the weeks upon weeks of uninterested play from my head. Hope we let him go this summer.

I imagine cammalleri might consider staying with the flames depending on the moves Burke makes at the draft and early on July 1st. If he feels like Burke is making draft choices and picks to accelerate the rebuild to the point the flames will try to compete for a playoff spot, he might stay, but I do think the cost will be $6 million per year wherever he goes.

The only thing that makes sense is for Burke to lowball him. He'd be a great asset on a cheap contract. 2 years @ 4.5 per perhaps. He says no of course. They part ways.
I don't really see any scenario where Cammalleri is back. He'll get more on the open market then it would make sense for us to offer him. We can't build around a small winger when we already have them in abundance (Hudler, Byron, Baertschi, Gaudreau.)
It's annoying that no team was willing to pony up anything decent for him at the deadline.

I'm not too familiar with the CBA, but is there any rule against signing a player, and then working out a deal with another team to trade him to that team for a draft pick and retaining salary?
So lets say Flames work out a deal with another team, where the Flames will sign Cammy to a $6M deal, and then immediately trade him to another team, while retaining $3M of the salary, and getting a draft pick back in return for absorbing part of the cap. Is there some sort of cap circumvention rule against this?

Id hope we offer him 2-3 at 5 or so and trade him retaining half salary for a 1st+
Good prospect.
I haven't actually read the cba but I have no idea why they would disallow this. Cammi at 2.5 for a few years either gives an elite team a serviceable secondary threat for cheap, or a cash strapped team a top 6 scoring winger that will fit into their budget easily.
I would be very disappointed if the flames do not retain cammalleri before free agency

I'd be all for a 1-2 year at around 6 mil give or take. He does all the right things off the ice work ethic wise, and seems to be well liked. We need to hit the floor some how.

Agreed 100%. A short-term, bigger money deal would be great from a Flames' perspective. Of course, no NTC/NMC would be ideal.
This type of contract would give us the ability to trade either him or Hudler for a pretty good return (perhaps) when guys like Baertschi and/or Gaudreau are ready to take over in the top 6. Obviously I have no idea if Cammy would even consider this type of contract, but it's certainly what I'm hoping for.
