The Oilers 'skilled' forwards seems to always wanna make that fancy play, that dangle. And it costs them, I love seeing that happen. And I think thats why we saw Gordon, Gazdig, etc play more minutes. Haha stupid Oilers.
Trouba was awesome, same with Scheifele. Two studs there for sure.

I think the Oilers should be able to take some positives away from their first game of the season.
1) None of their young superstar alternate captains suffered a dislocated shoulder.
2) Justin Shultz was only -1.
3) Devan Dubnyk's .821 save percentage is still in the NHL's top six over all.
</stupid oilers>

You don't watch much hockey then. The officials always award a goal when a guy is taken down on a breakaway with an empty net. In all my time watching hockey, I have never seen them not call a goal in that situation.

Yeah i think we are starting to see the effects of previous poor coaching. The kids were treated with kid gloves and as a result are still committing rookie mistakes. It will be interesting to see if they change their approach. Hall was a giveaway machine that directly lead to goals. This is why it is important to be able to play in al three zones. it seems they believe offense will cover all their defensive warts. First game in the warts won.

Hall looks like he wants to play for a different team, perhaps one 3 hours south?

I'm with Resolute, I've never not seen it called. I specifically remember several instances in just Flames' games the last few seasons.
About 5 years ago or so, the Flames were awarded a goal in such a situation that ended up being the game winning goal, since the other team scored a goal after it.

He's a skilled player but I'm not sure about the IQ as after three years you would think he would have realized that he can't simply skate through 1 to 3 defenders. He attempted it multiple times last night and one of them resulted in the puck in the back of the Oilers net. It's laughable that so many magazines and websites have already touted him as a top 10 player in this league as he still has a long way to go.

He was the direct contributor to two turn overs that lead to GA. First trying to dangle through the defenders alone while his linemates were changing, then a blind pass across the ice in the neutral zone when everyone s standing still. Stupid

Yup, Huselius vs LA on December 29th, 2006.

With 1:21 to go, the Flames up by two and the Los Angeles net empty, Huselius was awarded a goal when two Kings defenders dragged him down deep in their defensive zone, to prevent the Flames forward from scoring into the empty net.

Huselius scores 2 empty net goals, one of which was an automatic. LA scores two late before Huselius gets another.
Also of note, Barry Burst got the loss in net for the Kings.

In the pre-season game against the Flames, he made three blatant mental errors that led to goals against.
On one of them, the Oiler announcer said something to the effect of: "I've seen Messier do that about 100 times".
Made having to listen to those Oiler homers for a whole game totally worth it!

I don't think Hall is a good fit on the Flames. Let the stupid oilers deal with him for a while

He's also lucky he's not on the IR today, Trouba barely missed him with a massive hit when he was cutting into the middle in the Jets' zone. Can't believe he continues to do that while being unaware of his surroundings. It's a good way to end your career.

I have said for a long time that I think he will be the best defenseman of his draft class, and possibly the best player period.
He is exactly what the Oilers needed and they could have gotten a really good asset along with him for Yakupov (by trading the 1st pick for a pick in the 4 to 8 range).
I am so glad that they stuck with the Yak.

that kid line on the habs were pretty good last night (eller/galchenyuk/gallagher).
I think/hope galchenyuk will be the player of that draft, though trouba did look great in the small amount of time that i got to watch the jets game.

Got to agree with EE. His hockey IQ is terrible and the blank look on his face 99% of the time leads me to believe his mental IQ is not much better.

One of the big critisms of the Oilers is that when Renney and what's his face last year tried to make them come back and play solid defense the team basically refused to do it.
Part of that is the fault of the Oilers leadership and the type of players they've picked. Part of it is that you had coaches that wouldn't impose their will.
I'm sure that the Oilers are going through the film with Eakins minute by painful minute.
We know their blue line isn't good. With their injuries that key center slot is terrible and Dubnyk is a question mark in goal. He can make the big save when they don't need it, but not make the easier save when they really need it.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the Oilyaz out of it by Jan if they don't buy into actually playing an NHL system.
The fire wagon hockey of the 80's is dead, too many teams do a great job of capitalizing on their opportunites when a team has a bad team defense.
Schultz behind his blueline is absolutely looking like a deer in a bear trap.
