Calgary fans, you have got yourself a keeper. Reto Berra spectacular in Swiss' 3-0 win vs USA in #IIHFWorlds semifinal.

I thought he was solid, but not spectacular - simply because he didn't get as much to do as I had expected. His defensemen did an outstanding job and he didn't face too many quality shots ... but when the Swiss needed him, he was there, calm and solid. Only once he looked shaky when he tried to make a glove save in the 3rd period and missed it, but luckily the shot went wide. I was impressed by his movement, he is pretty quick for a big guy. He obviously takes away a lot from the net and he uses his size well. Not sure how he'll adapt to the NA game, but I think he has a lot of potential.
Switzerland's tournament is especially outstanding when you remember that they do it without Hiller, Brunner, Streit and Bärtschi ...

Oh I agree, That was some reporters tweet whom I have never heard of.
Good thing about Berra it seems is that he is so big in the butterfly that when he looks shakey it doesnt open much up. Does his catching glove look small or is it just me?
I do like his butterfly movement though, Reminds me a lot of Ed Belfours Butterfly stance.
29 shot shutout is still pretty note worthy still. BUt it is like you said a team shut out.

Sorry for the dumb question... Why isn't Sven Baertschi playing for the Swiss? Haven't really been following it up to this point...

If Sven was there the Swiss would have already been eliminated.
It's the Flames curse

Nino has a good shot of making the team out of training camp.
If the isles refused to trade him for a pick plus a decent prospect, when he struggled or at the start of the season when he demanded a trade, why would they now, when he's backed off the trade demand and is playing well?

Lombardi and Phaneuf were on Team Canada in 2007, the last time Canada won.

Yeah, Lombardi led the team with 6 goals and 6 assists. I mentioned he might be a good pick up for us last summer as we needed centres but everyone was in love with Cervanka. He didn't have a great year but still I think we could have used him.

Just wanted to mention that Lombardi led Canada in scoring, but he played LW the entire tournament.

So I'll hope for a Swedish win but a good performance by Berra (if he gets the nod).
1-0 to Sweden and the winning goal scored by Fransson sounds like a great game to me!

This is already guaranteed to be Switzerland's best result at the World Championships since 1935 (their one and only silver medal). The last time they won a medal at all was 1953, when they won bronze. They have never won gold.

so at least 2 Flames players/prospects will win medals today ... gold or silver for Berra, bronze for Butler or Ortio.
Word out of Switzerland is that Gerber will start in net today, not Berra. Disappointing, but not a surprising decision. Their coach clearly has faith in both goalies and wasn't afraid to change goalies between the quarterfinal and the semifinal, and it also being a back-to-back game it's not really surprising that Gerber gets the nod today.
Interesting to read and hear the comments of the Swiss media yesterday and today regarding Berra. They all seem to be 100 per cent sure that Berra will easily outplay MacDonald in the fall and battle Ramo for the #1 spot in Calgary. Obviously they are biased, but it was pretty interesting for me that they had no doubt that Berra, an unknown commodity in NA hockey, will overtake MacDonald on the depth chart immediately. I guess we'll see how he adapts to NA hockey, but IMO a year of AHL hockey is definitely a possibility.

At the time of the Bouwmeester trade I ventured over to one of those other message boards that is larger with more international fans to read what people that actually watched Berra had to say and there was a contingent that compared Berra's ability to that of Jonas Hiller before he came across to North America, others said he was a step below. But the consensus was that his statistics are misleading because he team was absolutely brutal and that he was the sole reason they were a playoff team (more or less similar to Bobrovsky this year except he sneaked his team in). These comments encouraged me and made me feel better about the trade.
But I will say what I did when we signed Cervenka, he is coming to a new culture, new team, new ice size, in a league that is more competitive than their previous. There will be time needed to adapt, this may even be a year long process. We need to be patient and understand that he is still a rookie. Fortunately Berra is a year younger than Cervenka was and will only be a RFA at the end of his contract and Reto doesn't have a European out clause so he is willing to adapt in the AHL if needed.

Also Switzerland being a Western European country, culturally it's propably a lot closer to Canada than Russia. He very propably speaks more English than Cervenka did. That makes NA much more appealing and KHL less appealing than it was with Cervenka.
Btw, does anybody know what's Berra's first language?
EDIT: Based on an interview I found, it seems to be (Swiss) German.
